1. Holiday Ideas |
Even if you don’t knit or crochet, let Lion Brand help
you make this holiday season uniquely yours:
- Use yarn instead of ordinary ribbon to tie around
packages (Incredible, Trellis, Festive Fur, Fun Fur,
Fancy Fur, FunFetti all work well here).
- Use craft glue or hot glue to decorate colored
shopping bags with Festive Fur, Fun Fur, Fancy Fur, or
FunFetti for giving your holiday gifts.
- Dress up a plain sweater quickly for a holiday party
by using coordinated sewing thread and needle to tack
Festive Fur or one of the other fur yarns at the neck,
cuffs, or in a random design across the front. After
wearing, the “fur” can easily be removed.
- “Drizzle” Festive Fur or one of the other fur
yarns around your holiday table to jazz up your
centerpiece or use it to tie rolled up napkins or glue
it around place cards and/or party invitations.

2. Caring
and Sharing |
It has become traditional at this time of year for Lion Brand to
highlight some opportunities for charitable knitting and crocheting, as
a way of sharing, both at this joyful season and year-round. You will
find a sampling of organizations listed below. Whether you celebrate
Chanukah, Christmas, Kwanzaa, or all three, the Lion Brand family wishes
you and yours a happy, healthy holiday, and some quiet time to relax
with your needles and/or hook.
National Organizations A perfect way to kick off this year’s
list is with Care Wear, the group founded by this year’s Knitter of
the Year, Bonnie Hagerman, who was profiled on last month’s “What’s
New?” page. Contact them at: www.hood.edu/carewear/index.shtml
Warm Up, America!, sponsored by the Craft Yarn Council of America, is
a wonderful – and wonderfully simple – way to get involved, even for
those who are just beginning to knit or crochet. All that’s necessary
is a 7” x 9” knit or crochet rectangle. For more information, visit:
www.warmupamerica.com
(Sample knit
and crochet
patterns of a Warm Up, America! Afghan done in Homespun can be
downloaded free from Lion Brand’s Website.)
| Caps for Kids, another program sponsored by the
Craft Yarn Council, provides warm hats for needy children. For a
crocheted preemie hat and knitted child’s ski cap pattern and

Warming Families is a group with many local chapters that
donate blankets and other warm items to agencies serving the needs
of homeless and displaced persons. For more information or to see
where the nearest chapter is, check out their Website at www.WarmingFamilies.org |

Caps for children made by the
Knit and Crochet Project Group of the Denton, Texas Senior Center |
| A Project Linus blanket is like a big hug when you
need one” reads the banner across the home page of this special
organization. A group dedicated to making and donating blankets
and quilts to needy children of all ages, Project Linus was named
one of the “10 Children’s Charities That Deserve Your Support”
by Parents’ magazine. To learn more, go to: www.ProjectLinus.org |
International Organizations
Afghans for Afghans began at the time of the war in Afghanistan as a
totally grass-roots effort to bridge the gap between the people of the
United States and the beleaguered people of Afghanistan: a humanitarian,
educational, people-to-people project to reach out to the many displaced
and poor people in that country with knitted woolen hats, mittens,
socks, sweaters, – and afghans – for protection against the bitter
Afghan winters. More information, see www.AfghansForAfghans.org
Millions of children have been orphaned by the AIDS epidemic in
Africa, with South Africa among the hardest hit. Sunbeam Kids
Foundation, a group in the Eastern Free State of that country, is
working to aid these children, many of whom have are literally heads of
their households. Babies’ and children’s sweaters and other garments
are most welcome, as is donation of yarn, which is knitted locally into
afghans and other items. The organization’s Website is: www.SunbeamKids.org.za

Hands Helping Humanity is one of many local
organizations that reaches out to help those in need!

Local Organizations
Your local craft store is a great place to check for
information on charitable knitting groups in your area. Many
stores have bulletin boards with information on local groups,
which in some cases even meet in the store itself. Don’t see a
group there? Why not start your own?
One very effective group in Gwinnett County, Georgia, near
Atlanta, is called Tiny Stitches. They provide basic layettes
containing clothing and other items to disadvantaged newborns and
preemies in north Georgia as well as burial ensembles to families
who have lost an infant, regardless of financial situation. If you’re
in the Atlanta area and want to get involved, contact them at
their Website: www.TinyStitches.org
