In my knitting and crocheting classes I tell my students that when you are either casting on for knitting or chaining for crocheting a large number of stitches mark every 10 (or 20, 50, etc.) stitches with a stitch marker or even a safety pin. It saves a lot of going back and counting if you can see that you already have 100 stitches and only need 50 more. - Jacki B.
