"Clearly, people want to make their lives the way they wish they were."
- J Peterman

Knit Patchwork Garter Baby ThrowSamuel named it Courage. The remaining corner of what had been his baby blanket. He kept it under his pillow. He thought she hadn't seen it. But she had.

Samuel. Her big handsome soldier boy. Her husband. She knew that Courage, the sweet remnant of his childhood, had helped pull Samuel through many long dark nights in far-off places. Helped him return whole and strong. To her, to their life together, and to the family they were about to create.

That's what she wanted to make for their child. So before she shared the news with Samuel, she bought soft balls of Baby Wool. On the nights when he studied at the law library, she stitched them into lofty squares. Solids and stripes of pink, green, blue, yellow, pale orange, and white. Colors of hope and cheer.

The pattern was easy. She knew she could finish in it in time.

They celebrated their fifth anniversary at home. Their first house, the much-needed renovations finally completed. After Samuel gently closed the clasp on the pearl necklace--his gift to her--she asked him to close his eyes. In the candle-lit room, she draped the little blanket over his shoulders.

"Courage," she told him. "For our baby."
