Knit Mitered Squares AfghanWhen Katie brought him home for Spring Break--the boy she'd mentioned increasingly since September--Frances knew he was The One. Mark was serious, sweet, handsome--and soon bound for medical school in California.

Sighing inwardly, Frances took out pattern, needles, yarn. The afghan was a graduation gift. As she knitted, Frances imagined Katie enfolded by its cloud-like warmth.

Now that she'd met Mark, Frances understood why Katie was talking of California after graduation, despite last summer's museum internship in Boston that led to an amazing job offer. Couldn't Katie see what she'd be relinquishing? She wanted to ask, "Katie, have you thought this through?" But headstrong Katie habitually rejected advice. And she was blindly in love.

Yet Frances's heart caught when she overheard her daughter say, "...but I'm worried about being so far from Mom...she hasn't anyone else."

"Your mother will be okay," Mark asserted.

Mark was right, of course. Frances would be okay. But Katie's concern was real. Daughter and mother had been a tight little team. Until now.

As Frances knitted, the yarn's luminous colors revealed themselves stitch by stitch, row by row. Of course I'll be okay. Frances studied the emerging afghan and marveled anew at how the colors drifted across the knitting, like a gentle force of nature.

Her daughter's future was suddenly so different than it had seemed just days before. But the afghan would be complete for when Katie needed it, Frances determined. It would be with Katie wherever she went, its squares secure and attached, its modulating hues anchored to a matrix equally of yarn and of love.
