"Click for a Cure" for Breast Cancer
248 Giralda Avenue
Coral Gables FL 33134 US
Phone: 305-445-3967
Fax: 305-445-3983

Contact: Joan Reitsma, President, Miami-Dade Chapter of Thrivent Financial for Lutherans jlreitsma@aol.com

About us: Cancer has changed my life as it has the lives of most of us. I have been blessed with opportunity to witness the amazing courage and enduring faith of Mary Weibel, Manager of Lutheran Community Services, as she faced every challenge and fear that accompanies the diagnosis of breast cancer. The humility and grace she shows in the joy and knowledge that she is a breast cancer survivor is equally overwhelming. Inspired by this amazing faith and courage, “Click for a Cure” was developed to respond to this major need. With the support of a $5,000.00 grant provided through Thrivent Financial for Lutherans’ Care in Regions program, yarns for the high-fashioned scarves and shrugs are provided to volunteers throughout the State of Florida...and we have attracted help beyoud our State borders. The variety, beauty, and abundance of the scarves have been overwhelming. Proceeds from the sale of the scarves and shrugs will benefit uninsured and underinsured women.

Mary is my friend. She is the inspiration for “Click for a Cure.” She is, more importantly, the embodiment of all women. She might be your mother, your wife, your daughter, the friend next door, or simply a stranger, faced with this devastating disease. "Click for a Cure" is a response to that haunting question: "What can I do to make a difference?"

Click for a Cure is a Care in Regions project coordinated by the Miami-Dade Chapter. Members, families, friends, and "new" friends, throughout the State of Florida and beyond, have joined hands in this cause and are knitting high-fashioned breast cancer scarves, shrugs and chemo caps. The proceeds from the sale of all scarves and other knitted items will be donated to The Mayte Prida Foundation.

During the past two years our volunteers have made a significant difference. Florida Thrivent Chapters and our many friends proudly partnered with the Susan G Komen Breast Cancer Foundation - SW Florida Affiliate donating more than $30,000, to advance the cause of breast cancer awareness and provide funds for breast cancer education and research. Our dedicated and talented volunteers amassed approximately 15,000 hours each year. The many volunteers are of all ages. Teenagers are learning to reach hands across generations. Shut-ins have participated and been involved in meaningful activity.

“Click for a Cure” begins a new adventure and partnership with the Mayte Prida Foundation this year. Mayte is a breast cancer survivor who established this foundation to meet the needs of breast cancer patients who face the many horrors of this devastating disease without sufficient funds and support. Our goals and focus remain the same as we look forward to new opportunities and broader horizons.

The Mayte Prida Foundation is a not-for-profit organization dedicated to helping women and their families meet the adversities of breast cancer. It is their mission to promote, educate and provide useful and concrete information to support the patients and their caregivers. The development of new programs includes the creation of oncology centers that will offer information, education, care, service, and emotional and economic support for those who have no way to meet expenses incurred by this devastating illness. The Mayte Prida Foundation is a “place for hope,” awaiting those who seek help.

NOTE: The English link to the websites are under construction and are incomplete. The scarve will be for sale in the Store.

We welcome all volunteers.

We make / need: While the majority of our work focuses on high-fashion scarves and shrugs/stoles, some of our volunteers have moved a step beyond and are making chemo caps, belts and purses.

Frequently volunteers have donated yarns that are not suited for high fashion and we are blessed to be able to donate them to oncology patients at our local hospitals.
We also include the children's cancer patients, bringing small toys to present with the scarves.

We have used many yarns and particularly love to work with Lion Brand Trellis, Incredible; Fancy Fur, Fun Fur and FunFetti - not only for their beauty, but because they are wonderfully reasonable in cost, thus enabling a graeter donation to the cause.

We are delighted to receive donations - both the finished product and yarn for volunteers to use. When they are not suitable for high fashion, we are happy to use than for Caps for Preemies and for afghans for the homeless and shelters for abused and abandoned women and children.

We thank Lion Brand and your readers for any help and support you are able to give us or any of the many amazing charities you list.
