GAUGE:
Each pattern section measures 10 inches (25.5 cm) across. When you match the gauge in a pattern, your project will be the size specified in the pattern and the materials specified in the pattern will be sufficient. The needle or hook size called for in the pattern is based on what the designer used, but it is not unusual for gauge to vary from person to person. If it takes you fewer stitches and rows to make your swatch, try using a smaller size hook or needles; if more stitches and rows, try a larger size hook or needles. Making a Gauge Swatch
Exact gauges is not imporant to this project.

STITCH EXPLANATION:
RTK (Right Twist with Knit) Skip next st on needle, k in front of next st and do not slip off needle, k the st just skipped and drop both sts off needle tog.

FINISHING

This assembly is made from pieces that have been knit to be different lengths.

The assembly is NOT symmetrical.

The assembly instructions are written as if the right side of all pieces is facing you.

To assemble right half of afghan: Join 1 piece of pattern II and 1 of of the long pieces of pattern III.

The piece of pattern II will be positioned so that the rows are horizontal; this end joins with the short end of pattern III.

The resulting piece will be 10 inches in width and 30 inches long.

This is piece A.

Join 1 piece of pattern I and one of pattern II.

The short edge of the piece of pattern I is joined to the piece of pattern II; the pattern II piece positioned so that the rows are horizontal.

The resulting piece will be 10 inches in width and 30 inches long.

This is piece B.

Join the long edges of pieces A and B, positioning them so that the portions of pattern II are not together (they are at opposite ends when the piece is positioned lengthwise.

The resulting piece will be 20 inches wide and 30 inches long This is piece C.

Join 1 piece of pattern II and one of the 10-inch pieces of pattern IV, positioning pattern IV so that the longer direction of the diamonds is vertical.

The piece with pattern II is on the left, that with pattern IV is on the right.

The piece will be 20 inches wide and 10 inches long.

This is piece D.

Positioning D so that the portion with pattern II is on the left, join the remaining piece of pattern I to the bottom, positioning it so that it is horizontal.

You will have a square 20 inches on each side.

It has a long piece of pattern I on the bottom and a piece of pattern II and one of pattern IV above it.

This is piece E.

Position one piece of pattern V horizontally across the top of piece E and join.

Piece E now has a strip of pattern I positioned horizontally at the bottom and a strip of pattern V positioned horizontally at the top.

It is 20 inches wide and 30 inches long.

This is piece F.

Join the long top edge of piece F (this is pattern V) to the edge of piece C that has the short edge of pattern III and the short edge of pattern II.

The resulting piece is 20 inches wide and 60 inches long.

This is the right side of the afghan.
Make a long strip by joining the short piece of pattern III, then a piece of pattern II and finally the long piece of pattern III positioned vertically.

This piece will be 10 inches wide and 40 inches long.

This is piece G.

Make a second long strip by joining the long piece of pattern IV and a piece of pattern II.

The short side of pattern IV joins to a side of pattern II where pattern II is positioned with the rows horizontal.

This piece will be 10 inches wide and 40 inches long.

This is piece H.

Position piece G so that the short piece of pattern III is at the top and position piece H so that the portion with pattern IV is at the top.

Piece G is on the left and piece H is on the right.

Join together in the long direction.

You will have a piece that is 20 inches wide and 40 inches long.

This is piece J.

This is piece K.

Position the remaining piece of pattern V horizontally across the bottom of piece K and join.

The piece will be 20 inches square.

This is piece L.

Join the bottom edge of piece L (this is the remaining free horizontal edge of the piece of pattern V) to the portion of piece J that has pattern III on the left and pattern IV on the right.

The resulting piece is 20 inches wide and 60 inches long.

This is the left side of the afghan.
Position the two pieces so that the long edge of the right side is adjacent to the long edge of the left side and join,.

Border with Mitered Corners

Cast on 1 st.

Working in Pattern II, increase 1 st at same edge every row until there are 11 sts on needle.

Work even until piece measures 40 inches.

Decrease 1 st at same edge as increases every row until 1 st remains.

Bind off.

Make 2 pieces 40 inches long from the short edges and 2 pieces 60 inches long for the long edges.

Sew to Afghan invisibly and along mitered corners.
