GAUGE:
14 sts + 20 rows = 4" (10 cm) over St st (k on RS, p on WS). BE SURE TO CHECK YOUR GAUGE. When you match the gauge in a pattern, your project will be the size specified in the pattern and the materials specified in the pattern will be sufficient. The needle or hook size called for in the pattern is based on what the designer used, but it is not unusual for gauge to vary from person to person. If it takes you fewer stitches and rows to make your swatch, try using a smaller size hook or needles; if more stitches and rows, try a larger size hook or needles. Making a Gauge Swatch
Exact gauges is not imporant to this project.

STITCH EXPLANATION:
ssk (slip, slip knit): Sl the next 2 sts as if to knit, one at a time, to right needle; insert left needle into the fronts of these 2 sts and k them tog from to dec 1 st.

NOTES:
Bag is made with 2 strands of yarn held together throughout.

INSTRUCTIONS
SIDE (make 2)

With larger needles, cast on 64 sts.

Work in St st until piece measures 14" long, ending WS row.

Make “sleeve” ties: K 14 and put on holder; k center 36 sts; sl rem 14 sts to holder.

Work center 36 sts in St st for 12".

Change to smaller needles and work k1, p1 rib for 3".

Bind off.
STRAPS

Sew side and bottom seams.

With RS facing, k 12 sts from holder on left of side piece, ssk, (and continuing across right side of other side piece) k2tog, k 12.

Next row: Purl.

Next Row: K1, ssk, k to last 3 sts, k2tog, k 1.

Rep last two rows 4 more times - 16 sts.

Work even in St st until strap measures 18", or half of total desired length.

Place rem sts on a holder.

Rep for other strap.
FINISHING

Join ends of strap together using 3-needle bind off: Put sts from one strap on one needle, and sts from other strap on a 2nd needle.

With needles parallel and right sides together, use a 3rd needle and k2tog (1 from front needle, 1 from back needle).

Repeat once.

*Pull first st on right needle over 2nd st (bind off), k2tog as before, rep from * until all sts are bound off.

Make a long tube by seaming sides of strap.

Seam “sleeve” ties for 11", beginning at cuff.

Fold corners of bottom edge to center, attach tog and tack down to center bottom seam.

Make a 4" tassel: Wind a single strand of yarn around a 4" piece of cardboard.

Cut at one end, making 8" long strands.

To attach tassel to center bottom, fold strands of yarn in half to form a loop; insert a crochet hook or fingers through back of work and pull loop through.

Bring the ends through loop and tighten.

Trim fringe evenly.
