GAUGE:
6 sts = 4" (10 cm), one row = 1 1/2" in double crochet. BE SURE TO CHECK YOUR GAUGE. When you match the gauge in a pattern, your project will be the size specified in the pattern and the materials specified in the pattern will be sufficient. The needle or hook size called for in the pattern is based on what the designer used, but it is not unusual for gauge to vary from person to person. If it takes you fewer stitches and rows to make your swatch, try using a smaller size hook or needles; if more stitches and rows, try a larger size hook or needles. Making a Gauge Swatch
Exact gauges is not imporant to this project.

STITCH EXPLANATION:
Sdc (Spike double-crochet) Work normal dc into the row below the ch3-space.

Yo, insert hook under top loops of st 2 rows below AND under the ch3, yo, draw up a loop, yo, draw through 2 loops on hook, enclosing the ch3.

Yo, draw through remaining 2 loops on hook.

To change color when the last st is dc Work dc until final yo, drop yarn, pick up new yarn (carried up the side) from underneath the old, yo and complete dc with new yarn.

Then wrap the yarns once more by bringing the old yarn from underneath, over and to the back of work.

Turn and continue with new yarn.

To change color when the last st is slip st Work last 2 ch, drop yarn, pick up new yarn from underneath the old, slip st in top of turning chain with new yarn.

Wrap yarns.

Turn and continue with new yarn.

NOTES:
• The loops belonging to the first st of a block can get hidden by previous row of Sdc.

Be sure to slide the previous row aside to find the correct st.

• Color changes at end of every row.

• Carry the unused strands (one at each end) up the sides.

INSTRUCTIONS
PATTERN STITCH

Note: At first glance the pattern resembles a check.

But look more closely and you'’ll see the blocks of color overlap, creating a three-color checkered look while working just one color across each row of crochet.

Both sides look the same, so there’'s no wrong side to this afghan.

Each row of this pattern is made with blocks alternating with ch-3 spaces.

The blocks “spike”, overlapping and covering the previous ch-3.

Pattern Row 1 Ch 3, Sdc next 2 sts of block 2 rows below, (ch 3, skip next 3 sts, Sdc in next 3 sts) across.

Turn.

Pattern Row 2 Ch 3, skip first 3 sts of block, Sdc in next 3 sts of block 2 rows below, (ch 3, skip next 3 sts, Sdc in next 3 sts) across.

At end, ch 2, skip 2 sts, slip st in last st.

Turn.
AFGHAN

With A, ch 63 loosely.

Drop A.

Row 1: With B, ch 3, dc in next 2 ch, (ch 3, skip 3 ch, dc in next 3 ch) across; drop B, pick up C in last dc.

Row 2: With C, ch 3, skip first 3 sts of block, (Sdc into next 3 base-chs 2 rows below, ch 3, skip next 3 sts) across.

At end, omit ch 3, instead ch 2, drop C, pick up A, slip st in top of turning chain.

Row 3: With A work Pattern Row 1, changing to B at end.

Row 4: With B work Pattern Row 2, changing to C at end.

Rows 5-71: Work pattern as established, alternating Pattern Rows 1 and 2 while changing colors at end of each row in A, B, C sequence.

End by working Pattern Row 1 with C, drop C, pick up A.

Turn.

Finishing Row: With A, ch 1, sc in first 3 sts of block, (Sdc next 3 sts, sc in next 3 sts of block) across.

Work 2 more sc in last st for corner.

Rotate and sc along the side, making 2 sc in the side of each Sdc row and working under 2 strands of edge plus carried strand.

Rotate and finish the other end, making 3sc-corner in first spare loop of base ch, sc in next 2 spare loops, (dc in next 3 spare loops, sc in next 3 spare loops) across.

Make 2 more sc in last loop for corner, rotate and sc along side as for other side.

Make 2 sc in same st as beg sc.

Slip st in beg sc.

Do not turn.

EDGING

Continue around, ch 1, sc in same sc and in each st around entire edge of Afghan, making 3 sc in center sc of each corner.

At end of round, make 3 sc in last sc, slip st in beg sc.

Fasten off.

Weave in ends.
