16 sc + 15 rows = 4" [10 cm]. BE SURE TO CHECK YOUR GAUGE. When you match the gauge in a pattern, your project will be the size specified in the pattern and the materials specified in the pattern will be sufficient. The needle or hook size called for in the pattern is based on what the designer used, but is not unusual for gauge to vary from person to person. If it takes you fewer stitches and rows to make your swatch, try using a smaller size hook or needles; if more stitches and rows, try a larger size hook or needles.
Making a Gauge Swatch
Exact gauges is not imporant to this project.
BAG FRONT AND BACK – Make 2
With MC, ch 29.
Sc in 2nd ch from hook and in each ch across; turn – 28 sts.
Continue in sc and, AT SAME TIME, increase 1 st at both ends of every row until there are a total of 48 sts.
Work even on these 48 sts until there are a total of 34 rows.
Place Front and Back with right sides together.
Beginning at top, slip st Front to Back along side, bottom and remaining side.
Turn right side out.
Sew zipper into Bag opening.
STRAP – Make 2
Sc in 2nd ch from hook and in each ch across; turn – 3 sts.
Work even in sc on these 3 sts until Strap measures 31" [78.5 cm] or desired length.
Slip st long edges of Straps together to make a double thickness.
Sew ends of Strap to sides of Bag.
With CC, ch 53.
Row 1: Dc in 5th ch from hook, *ch 1, skip 1, (dc, ch 1, dc) in next ch (V-stitch made); repeat from * across; turn – 25 Vstitches.
Row 2:Ch 3 (counts as dc), 5 dc in first ch1-space, *sc in next ch1-space, 6 dc in next ch1-space (shell st made); repeat from *, ending 6 dc in last ch1-space – 25 shells.
Fasten off, leaving long tail for anchoring Flower.
Thread large-eyed blunt needle with tail and weave to base of last st.
Starting at that end, roll first shell tightly to form center bud; anchor at base of shell with 2 sts.
Roll remaining strip to form Flower, then secure by stitching in and out through layers of foundation ch at bottom of Flower.
Attach Flower securely to Bag or sew or glue pin back to back of Flower.
