18 sts + 24 rows = 4" [10 cm] in St st (k on RS, p on WS). BE SURE TO CHECK YOUR GAUGE. BE SURE TO CHECK YOUR GAUGE. When you match the gauge in a pattern, your project will be the size specified in the pattern and the materials specified in the pattern will be sufficient. If it takes you fewer stitches and rows to make a 4 in. [10 cm] square, try using a smaller size hook or needles; if more stitches and rows, try a larger size hook or needles.

ssk (slip, slip, knit): Slip next 2 sts as if to knit, one at a time, to right needle; insert left needle into fronts of these 2 sts and k them tog.

Row 2: *With CC, p 2; with MC, p 3; with CC, p 1; repeat from * across.
Row 3: *With CC, k 2; with MC, k 1; with CC, k 3; repeat from * across.
Row 4: With CC, purl.
Row 5: With CC, knit.
Row 6: *With MC, p 1; with CC, p 5; repeat from * across.

With MC, cast on 116 sts.
Work even in St st for 11⁄2" [6.5 cm], ending with a WS row.
Start Color Pattern: Join CC and work 8 rows of Chevron Pattern once, carrying unused colors behind work; break off CC.
Work 6 rows MC.
Join CC and work second repeat of Chevron Pattern.
Start Decreases: On next RS row K 1, k2tog, k to last 3 sts, ssk, k 1.
Repeat Dec Row every other row 21 more times, 72 stitches.
Shape Shoulder: Bind off 2 sts at beg of next 14 rows – 44 sts.
Piece should measure approximately 151⁄2" [39 cm].
Sew side seams.
Place 84 sts from holders on circular needle, and join to work in the round.
Work in K 1, P 1 Rib for 6" [15 cm] or desired length.
Bind off all sts.
Weave in ends.
With CC, cut 11" [28 cm] lengths of yarn for bottom edge fringe, 4" [10 cm] lengths for turtleneck fringe.
Fold 2 strands in half and, with crochet hook, pull fold through edge of Poncho, forming a loop.
Pull ends of fringe through this loop.
Pull to tighten.
Attach fringes as desired along edge of Poncho.
