6 hdc = 4" [10 cm] + 5 rows = 3" [7.5 cm] in hdc. BE SURE TO CHECK YOUR GAUGE. When you match the gauge in a pattern, your project will be the size specified in the pattern and the materials specified in the pattern will be sufficient. The needle or hook size called for in the pattern is based on what the designer used, but it is not unusual for gauge to vary from person to person. If it takes you fewer stitches and rows to make your swatch, try using a smaller size hook or needles; if more stitches and rows, try a larger size hook or needles.
Making a Gauge Swatch
Exact gauges is not imporant to this project.
V-st 2 hdc in same space.
Base ch/sc (Note This method creates a base ch and a row of sc at the same time: easy, sturdy and elastic, especially useful for necklines and waistlines.) Start with a slip knot, ch 2, insert hook in 2nd ch from hook, draw up a loop, yo, draw through 1 loop, yo, and draw through 2 loops – 1 single crochet with its own chain at bottom.
Work next stitch under loops of that chain.
Insert hook under 2 loops at bottom of the previous stitch, draw up a loop, yo and draw through 1 loop, yo and draw through 2 loops.
Repeat for length of foundation.
Beginning ch 2 counts as first hdc throughout.
Base ch/sc 90.
Row 1: Ch 2 (counts as first hdc), skip first sc, hdc in each sc across, turn – 90 sts.
Rows 2-4: Ch 2, *hdc in space between next 2 hdc; repeat from * across, ending with last hdc in t-ch, turn – 90 sts.
Note Place a marker in each V-st in Row 5 and move each marker up as work progresses.
Row 5: Ch 2, *hdc in space between next 2 hdc*; repeat from * to * 36 times, (V-st between next 2 hdc; repeat from * to * 5 times) twice, V-st between next 2 hdc; repeat from * to * across, ending with last hdc in t-ch, turn – 93 sts.
Rows 6-12: Ch 2, (*hdc in space between next 2 hdc; repeat from * to next marker, V-st in space of V-st) 3 times; (hdc in space between next 2 hdc) across, ending with last hdc in t-ch, turn – 114 sts at end of last row.
Rows 13-22 Repeat Row 2.
Weave in ends.
