GAUGE:

12 sts = 4” [10 cm] in St st (k every rnd). BE SURE TO CHECK YOUR GAUGE. When you match the gauge in a pattern, your project will be the size specified in the pattern and the materials specified in the pattern will be sufficient. If it takes you less stitches and rows to make a 4 in. [10 cm] square, try using a smaller size hook or needles; if more stitches and rows, try a larger size hook or needles.

STITCH EXPLANATION:

STITCH EXPLANATIONS
skp (slip, knit, pass)
Sl 1 st as if to knit, k 1, pass slipped st over.
Kitchener Stitch (Grafting) Holding the 2 needles parallel with wrong sides of fabric together, thread a large-eyed blunt needle with one of the yarn ends and work as follows:
Insert needle as if to purl into first stitch on front piece. Insert needle as if to knit into first stitch on back piece. Then follow steps 1-4 as outlined below. 1) insert needle as if to knit through first st on front needle and let the st drop from needle. 2) Insert needle into 2nd st on front needle as if to purl and pull the yarn through, leaving st on the needle. 3) Insert needle into first st on back needle as if to purl and let it drop from the needle, then 4) insert it as if to knit through 2nd st on back needle and pull the yarn through, leaving st on needle. Rep steps 1-4 until all sts have been grafted. Adjust tension as necessary.

SOCK
RIBBING
Cast on 24 sts and divide evenly onto 4 needles. Place marker and join for working in the rnd, being careful not to twist sts. Work in K1, P1 Rib for 3” [7.5 cm]. Work across the first needle once more and turn to begin heel flap.

HEEL FLAP

With WS facing, work K1, P1 Rib across 6 sts of first needle and 6 sts of 2nd needle using 1 needle. – 12 sts on 1 needle. Working back and forth (as on straight needles) work 8 more rows K1, P1 Rib on these 12 sts.

TURN HEEL

K 8, skp; turn.

WS Row Sl 1, p 4, p2tog; turn.

RS Row Sl 1, k 4, skp; turn.

Rep the last 2 rows once, then work WS row once more – 6 sts on needle.

With RS facing and first needle, k 6, then pick up and knit 6 sts along side of heel flap; with 2nd and 3rd needles, k 12 instep sts; with 4th needle, pick up and knit 6 sts along other side of heel flap, then k 3 from first needle – 9 sts on each of needles 1 and 4, 6 sts on each of needles 2 and 3.

GUSSETS

Knit 1 rnd.

Dec Rnd Knit to last 3 sts of first needle, k2tog, k 1; knit across 2 instep needles; on 4th needle, k 1, skp, knit to end of rnd.

Rep last 2 rnds until 24 sts remain (6 sts on each needle).

FOOT

Continue in St st until foot measures 1” [2.5 cm] less than desired length from back of heel to end of foot. Note Because this is bulky yarn so you must consider the “inside” space of the sock to get a proper fit. The finished sock will be about 1” [2.5 cm] longer than your usual sock.

SHAPE TOE

Dec Rnd *Knit to last 3 sts of first needle, k2tog, k 1; on next needle, k 1, skp, k to end; rep from * once more – 4 sts decreased.

Knit 1 rnd.

Rep Dec Rnd once more – 16 sts. With 4th needle, k 4 from first needle. Sl all instep sts onto 2nd needle – 8 sts on each of 2 needles. Graft toe. Weave in ends.
