6.5 sts + 8 rows = 2 inches [5 cm] in St st (k on RS, p on WS). When you match the gauge in a pattern, your project will be the size specified in the pattern and the materials specified in the pattern will be sufficient. The needle or hook size called for in the pattern is based on what the designer used, but it is not unusual for gauge to vary from person to person. If it takes you fewer stitches and rows to make your swatch, try using a smaller size hook or needles; if more stitches and rows, try a larger size hook or needles. Making a Gauge Swatch
Exact gauges is not imporant to this project.

With one strand each A and B held together, cast on 22 sts.
*Beg with a k row, work 3 rows St st.

Knit next (WS) row.*
Drop A and pick up C.

Repeat from * to *.
**Inc row (RS) Increase 1 st in first st, k to last st, inc 1 st in last st.
Work 4 rows St st, k next (WS) row.**
Drop C and pick up A.
***Work 5 rows St st, k next (WS) row.***
Drop B and pick up C.

Repeat from ** to **.
Drop C and pick up A.

Repeat from *** to ***.
Drop A and pick up C.

Work 4 rows St st.
Bind off all sts as if to purl.

Beg at cast-on edge, sew 5 inches [12.5 cm] side seam.

Leave next 2 inches [5 cm] open for thumb opening, and sew remaining 2 inches [5 cm] seam.

Weave in ends.

Wind remaining yarn into balls of 1 strand each of 2 colors (first ball of A and B, second ball of B and C, third ball of C and A).

With first ball, cast on 13 sts.

Work in St st, randomly changing to second and third balls as desired until headband measures about 17.5 inches [44.5 cm] from beg.

Bind off.

Making sure not to twist headband, sew cast on edge to bound off edge.

Weave in ends.

Headband is designed so that edges will roll slightly to the WS.
