GAUGE:
9 sc + 10 rows = 3 inches [7.5 cm] BE SURE TO CHECK YOUR GAUGE. When you match the gauge in a pattern, your project will be the size specified in the pattern and the materials specified in the pattern will be sufficient. If it takes you less stitches and rows to make a 4 in. [10 cm] square, try using a smaller size hook or needles; if more stitches and rows, try a larger size hook or needles.

HORSE HEAD With A, ch 40. Row 1 Sc in 2nd ch from hook and in each ch across - 39 sc. Turn. Rows 2-24 Ch 1, sc in each sc, turn. Top of Head Row 25 Ch 1, sc in 26 sc. Turn. Row 26 Ch 1, sc in 13 sc. Turn. Row 27 Ch 1, sc in 13 sc, sc in first sc on unworked section. Turn. Row 28 Ch 1, sc in 14 sc, sc in first sc on unworked section. Turn. Row 29 Ch 1, sc in 15 sc, sc in first sc on unworked section. Turn. Rows 30-52 Continue in this manner, working 1 more sc on unworked sectionevery row until all sc have been worked - 39 sc. Row 53 Ch 1, sc2tog, sc in 35 sc, sc2tog - 37 sc. Turn. Rows 54-61 Ch 1, sc in each sc. Turn. Divide for Nose Row 62 Ch 1, sc2tog, sc in 14 sc, sc2tog - 14 sc. Turn each row. Rows 63-68 Ch 1, sc2tog, sc across to last 2 sc, sc2tog - 4 sc. Fastenoff. Skip 1 sc at center of Row 61, join yarn in next sc, repeat Rows 62-68 for otherside of Nose. Ears (make 2) Beg at bottom edge, with A, ch 5. Row 1 Sc in 2nd ch from hook and in each ch across - 4 sc. Turn eachrow. Rows 2-4 Ch 1, sc in each sc. Row 5 Ch 1, (sc2tog) twice - 2 sc. Row 6 Ch 1, sc2tog - 1 sc. Fasten off. Edging With RS facing, join A at bottom right corner, sc along right edge of ear,working 3 sc at top of ear, sc along left edge, ending at bottom left corner.Fasten off. MANE With A, ch 28. Row 1 Sc in 2nd ch from hook and in each ch across - 27 sc. Turn eachrow. Row 2 Ch 1, sc working in FRONT lp only. Row 3 Ch 1, sc working in BACK lp only. Fasten off. Fringe Wrap B around cardboard square. Cut strands at one end. Hold 2 strands ofyarn together and fold in half. Use crochet hook to draw fold through first stalong opposite edge of beg foundation ch, forming a loop. Pull ends of strandsthrough this loop. Pull to tighten for Fringe. Work Fringe in each st across.Work another row of Fringe in the unworked lps of Row 2 and 4 of Mane. Fringewill be worked on both sides of Mane piece. Work 1 row of Fringe around sts ofRow 1. Work 1 row of Fringe in sts of last row. Bangs With A, ch 6. Row 1 Sc In 2nd ch from hook and in each ch across - 5 sc. Turn. Row 2 Ch 1, sc in each sc. Fasten off. With B, make Fringe and securethrough sts on opposite edge of beg ch. Work Fringe in last row. Bridle (make 2) With C, ch 21. Sc in 2nd ch from hook and in each ch across - 20 sc.Fasten off. Reins With C, ch 93. Sc in 2nd ch from hook and in each ch across - 92 sc.Fasten off. FINISHING Drill a hole through dowel about 1" [2.5 cm] from one end. Paint dowel with several coats of paint, drying and sanding between coats.Sew nose, head, and neck seam of head. Stuff nose with polyester filling. Secure eyes to head. Stuff top of head. Insert dowel, adding stuffing to hold it firmly in place and to prevent dowel from poking through crochet. With double strand of A, sew from one side of top of Head at Ear level through dowel to the other side of Head. Fasten securely. Weave double strand of A through beg ch edge at bottom edge of neck and gather tightly. Fasten securely.Sew Mane along back neck. Gather bottom of Ears tog and sew to each side of Head. Sew Bangs to forehead.Sew each end of Bridle pieces to rings as per photo, adjusting to fit snugly around nose. Sew Bridle onto nose. Sew a ring to each end of Reins.
