Oversized Turtleneck

Lion Brand® Mystery®

10 sts + 17 rows = 4” [10 cm] in St st (k on RS, p on WS) on larger needles. When you match the gauge in a pattern, your project will be the size specified in the pattern and the materials specified in the pattern will be sufficient. The needle or hook size called for in the pattern is based on what the designer used, but it is not unusual for gauge to vary from person to person. If it takes you fewer stitches and rows to make your swatch, try using a smaller size hook or needles; if more stitches and rows, try a larger size hook or needles.

Making a Gauge Swatch

With smaller needles, cast on 46 (50, 54) sts. Work in K2, P2 Rib for 3¾ inches [9.5 cm]. Change to larger needles and work in St st, dec dec 1 st at each edge on 33 and 49th rows Work even until piece measures 17 inches [43 cm] – 42 (46, 50) sts.

Shape Armhole
Continuing in St st, bind off 0 (1, 3) sts at beg of next 2 rows – 42 (44, 44) sts. Dec 1 st each end every 4th row 9 times – 24 (26, 26) sts. Work even until armhole measures 9 inches [23 cm]. Bind off remaining 24 (26, 26) sts for neck.

Work as for Back until piece measures 23 inches [58.5 cm], ending with a WS row.

Shape Neck
Next Row (RS)
Knit to center 6 sts, join 2nd ball of yarn and bind off center 6 sts, knit to end.
Working both sides separately, and shaping armholes as for back, dec 1 st at neck edge every row 9 (10, 10) times.

With smaller needles cast on 26 sts. Work in K2, P2 Rib for 3¾ inches [9.5 cm], ending with a WS row. Change to larger needles and St st.
Next Row (RS) K 1, *increase 1 st, k 1; repeat from *, end k 1 – 38 sts.
Continue in St st above ribbing. Dec 1 st at each end on 33rd, 49th, 55th rows – 34 sts. Work even until piece measures about 17 inches [43 cm] from beginning, end with a WS row. Dec 1 st each end every 3rd row until 8 sts remain. Bind off.

Sew Sleeves to body along raglan edges. Sew side and Sleeve seams.

With circular needle, pick up and knit 56 sts around neck. Place marker and join for working in the round. Work in K2, P2 Rib until neck rib measures 10 inches [25.5 cm]. Bind off loosely.

Weave in ends.

Oversized Turtleneck Reviewed by Sasha on 2011-11-02 ****
This was my first sweater (and my first more complicated work), and I don't agree that it's hard to follow the instructions. Everything was easy to understand, except one thing: you have to make sure that the decreasments on the upper sides of the sleeves match up to the decreasments on the uppersides of back and front! that was the only thing that was a little hard to get.
I used different yarn than suggested, and also changed the length of the ribbing at bottom and the width of the sleeves, so my sweater actually isn't oversized, haha :P
I recommend this as a good first complicated project :)
