Fringed Skirt

GAUGE:

12 sts and 19 rows = 4 in. [10 cm] in St st (k on RS, p on WS) with larger needles. BE SURE TO CHECK YOUR GAUGE. When you match the gauge in a pattern, your project will be the size specified in the pattern and the materials specified in the pattern will be sufficient. If it takes you less stitches and rows to make a 4 in. [10 cm] square, try using a smaller size hook or needles; if more stitches and rows, try a larger size hook or needles.

NOTES:

Skirt is worked in two pieces beginning at lower edge. Fringe is added after Skirt is seamed.

FRONT
With larger needles and A, cast on 102 (108, 114, 120, 126, 132, 138) sts. Knit 1 row.
Row 1 (RS): Knit.
Continue in St st (k on RS, p on WS) until piece measures 4 in. [10 cm] from beg, end with a RS row.
Next Row (WS): Knit, forming a ridge to be used in fringe attachment later.
Dec Row (RS): Change to B, knit, dec 10 sts evenly spaced across – 92 (98, 104, 110, 116, 122, 128) sts. Continue in St st until piece measures 8 in. [20.5 cm] from beg, end with a RS row.
Next Row (WS): Knit, forming a ridge to be used in fringe attachment later.
Dec Row (RS): Change to A, knit, dec 10 sts evenly spaced across – 82 (88, 94, 100, 106, 112, 118) sts.
Continue in St st until piece measures 12 in. [30.5 cm] from beg, end with a RS row.
Next Row (WS): Knit, forming a ridge to be used in fringe attachment later.
Dec Row (RS): Change to C, knit, dec 8 sts evenly spaced across – 74 (80, 86, 92, 98, 104, 110) sts.
Continue in St st until piece measures 15 in. [38 cm] from beg, end by knitting a WS row.
Dec Row (RS): Change to B, knit, dec 8 sts evenly spaced across – 66 (72, 78, 84, 90, 96, 102) sts.
Continue in St st until piece measures 18 in. [45.5 cm], end by knitting a WS row.
Dec Row (RS): Change to C, knit, dec 8 sts evenly spaced across – 58 (64, 70, 76, 82, 88, 94) sts.
Continue in St st until piece measures 21 in. [53.5 cm] from beg, end by knitting a WS row.
Dec Row (RS): Change to A, knit, dec 6 sts evenly spaced across – 52 (58, 64, 70, 76, 82, 88) sts.
Continue in St st until piece measures 23 in. [58.5 cm], end by knitting a WS row.
Dec Row (RS): Change to B, knit, dec 6 sts evenly spaced across – 46 (52, 58, 64, 70, 76, 82) sts.
Continue in St st until piece measures 25 in. [63.5 cm], end with a WS row.
Dec Row (RS): Change to A, knit, dec 6 sts evenly spaced across – 40 (46, 52, 58, 64, 70, 76) sts.
Continue in St st until piece measures 27 in. [68.5 cm] from beg, end with a RS row.
Next Row (WS): Knit, for waistband turning ridge.
Next Row (RS): Change to smaller needles and work in St st for 2 in. [5 cm]. Bind off with larger needle.

BACK
Work as for Front.

FINISHING
Sew side seams. Fold waistband to WS along turning ridge and sew in place, leaving an opening for inserting elastic. Cut elastic slightly smaller than waist measurement. Insert elastic through waistband casing and sew ends together. Sew opening closed. Weave in ends.

FRINGE|
Cut yarn into 10 in. [25.5 cm] lengths for 4 in. [10 cm] stripes. On RS, beg at lower A stripe, attach B Fringe; for second B stripe, attach A Fringe; for third A stripe, attach C Fringe. To attach Fringe, fold 1 strand in half. Use crochet hook to draw fold through a st in the ridge row, forming a loop. Pull ends of Fringe through this loop. Attach Fringe in each st along ridge row.

Cut yarn into 8 in. [20.5 cm] lengths for 3 in. [7.5 cm] stripes. Beg at fourth C stripe, attach B Fringe; for fifth B stripe, attach C Fringe; for sixth C stripe, attach A Fringe. Cut yarn into 6 in. [15 cm] lengths for 2 in. [2.5 cm] stripes. Beg at seventh A stripe, attach B Fringe; for eighth B stripe, attach A Fringe. Trim Fringe ends evenly.
