GAUGE:
13 sts + 14 rows = 4 in. [10 cm] in sc with A. BE SURE TO CHECK YOUR GAUGE. When you match the gauge in a pattern, your project will be the size specified in the pattern and the materials specified in the pattern will be sufficient. If it takes you fewer stitches and rows to make a 4 in. [10 cm] square, try using a smaller size hook or needles; if more stitches and rows, try a larger size hook or needles.
STITCH EXPLANATION:
FPSC (front post single crochet)
Insert hook from front to back then to
front, going around the sc post, draw up a loop, yo and draw through 2 loops on
hook. Skip st behind the FPSC.
sc2tog (sc dec)
Insert hook into st and draw up a loop. Insert hook into
next st and draw up a loop. Yarn over, draw through all 3 loops on hook.
Note:
When working sc in joined rounds, always sk the sl st at beg of rnd,
sc in the next actual sc. Make the final sc of each round in the last sc, the
one with the sl st join. Sole is a shaped oval, made in joined rounds back and
forth, with short-rnd shaping; the join is at center of heel. For clarity, mark
the sc at center of toe and move marker up into each center sc as you go.

these are great, But I ran into the same problem, so i added rows also but how i did it wat when it got to making the row b4 the falps i stitched 7 sc in the back loop the rest in both to the last 7 in back loops, then made 2 more rows and and then stitched my flaps in the free ends of the 7 stitches, i also sc the vamp and tongue on in a contrasting color which gave them depth........they are great im going to try shrinking the pattern to make baby booties, and going to enlarge to make mens using browns, mustards and greens, taupe, black........anyway thanks for an inspiring pattern....my name is michael im know as eaudecrochet, one of a rare few men that crochet as soon as i get a pic of them i will send it in
