1. Four 3/4 in. [19 mm] buttons
GAUGE:
15 sts = 4 in. [10 cm] in garter st (k every row) with 1 strand of A and 1 strand of B held tog. BE SURE TO CHECK YOUR GAUGE. When you match the gauge in a pattern, your project will be the size specified in the pattern and the materials specified in the pattern will be sufficient. If it takes you fewer stitches and rows to make a 4 in. [10 cm] square, try using a smaller size hook or needles; if more stitches and rows, try a larger size hook or needles.
Exact gauges is not imporant to this project.
STITCH EXPLANATION:
STRIPE PATTERN
Rows 1-6 Work in garter st with 1 strand each of A and B held tog.
Rows 7-10 Work in garter st with 1 strand each of A and C held tog.
Repeat Rows 1-10 for Stripe Pattern.
INSTRUCTIONS
SWEATER
With 1 strand each of A and B held tog, cast on 45 (49, 53) sts.
Knit 4 rows.
Beg with Row 1, work in Stripe Pattern until piece measures 4 (4 1/2, 5) in.
[10 (11.3, 12.5) cm] from beg; end with a WS row.
Shape Sleeves Inc 1 st at each end of every RS row 18 (20, 22) times - 81 (89, 97) sts.
Note Piece should measure approximately 9 (10, 11) in.
[23 (25.5, 28) cm] from beg.
Shape Cuffs Cast on 8 (8, 10) sts at end of next 2 rows - 97 (105, 117) sts.
Work even in garter st and Stripe Pattern for 3 (3 1/2, 4) in.
[7.5 (9, 10) cm].
Shape Back Neck
Next row K 40 (44, 49) sts and slip onto a holder for Right Front, bind off next 17 (17, 19) sts, k rem 40 (44, 49) sts for Left Front.
Shape Left Front Continue even on Left Front sts for 4 rows.
Inc 1 st at neck edge on every RS row 3 (3, 4) times - 43 (47, 53) sts.
Next row Cast on 2 sts at neck edge - 45 (49, 55) sts.
Work even for one row.
Next row Cast on 6 sts at neck edge - 51 (55, 61) sts.
Work even until cuff measures 6 (7, 8) in.
[15 (18, 20.5) cm].
Bind off 8 (8, 10) cuff sts - 43 (47, 51) sts.
Dec 1 st at side edge every RS row 18 (20, 22) times - 25 (27, 29) sts.
Work even until Left Front is same length as Back.
Bind off all sts.
Count ridges on Left Front and place 4 buttons evenly spaced between ridges on Left Front opening edge.
Shape Right Front Attach yarn to Right Front sts at neck edge.
Work to correspond to Left Front, reversing shaping and working buttonholes (opposite markers) as foll: Work to 4 sts from end of row, (k2tog, yo) for buttonholes, k 2 (Front opening edge).
FINISHING
Sew side and Sleeve seams.
Fold cuff back.
Sew on buttons.
Weave in ends.
HAT
With 1 strand each of A and B held tog, cast on 60 (66, 70) sts.
Knit 4 rows.
Beg with Row 1, work in Stripe Pattern until piece measures 6 1/2 (7 1/2, 8) in.
[16.3 (19.3, 20.5) cm] from beg.
K2tog across row - 30 (33, 35) sts.
Knit one row.
Next Row K2tog across, end k 0 (1, 1) - 15 (17, 18) sts.
Cut end leaving a long tail.
Thread tail into large-eyed blunt needle and thread through remaining sts; pull tightly to secure.
Sew seam.
Weave in ends.
