GAUGE:

16 stitches across and 32 rows down should measure 4 in. [10 cm] in garter stitch (knit every stitch on every row). BE SURE TO CHECK YOUR GAUGE. When you match the gauge in a pattern, your project will be the size specified in the pattern and the materials specified in the pattern will be sufficient. If it takes you fewer stitches and rows to make a 4 in. [10 cm] square, try using a smaller size hook or needles; if more stitches and rows, try a larger size hook or needles.

NOTES:

Hat is worked as a rectangle.

HAT
Cast on 64 stitches. Work in garter stitch (knit every stitch on every row) until the first ball of yarn is almost finished. At the beginning of the next row, attach the second ball of yarn, leaving a tail of both balls. Continue in garter stitch (knit every stitch on every row) until there are a total of 60 rows (30 ridges). Loosely bind off all stitches, leaving a long tail.

FINISHING
Fold rectangle in half lengthwise and use tail to sew seam.

Seam is center back of Hat. At one open end of Hat, sew center front to center back at seam to make top of Hat. Bring center of each side in to meet at top of Hat. Sew together. Four ‘teardrop’ openings will remain at top of Hat. Weave in ends by threading each end into large-eyed blunt needle, then weaving the end through the knitted stitches.

Pompoms (Make 3)
Wrap yarn around cardboard – the more wraps, the fuller the Pompom will be. Cut yarn leading from ball. Slide a doubled strand of yarn under center of wraps and knot. Clip loops; remove cardboard. Fluff Pompom and trim ends evenly. Use the ends of the knotted strand to attach Pompom to Hat.
