Bright Baby Cardigan

GAUGE:

16 sts + 22 rows = 4 in. [10 cm] in St st (k on RS, p on WS). BE SURE TO CHECK YOUR GAUGE. When you match the gauge in a pattern, your project will be the size specified in the pattern and the materials specified in the pattern will be sufficient. If it takes you less stitches and rows to make a 4 in. [10 cm] square, try using a smaller size hook or needles; if more stitches and rows, try a larger size hook or needles.

BACK
Cast on 40 (42, 44) sts. Work in St st until piece measures 5¼ (6, 6) in. [13.5 (15, 15) cm] from beg, end with a WS row.

Shape Armhole
Dec 1 st each side of next 4 rows – 32 (34, 36) sts. Work even until armhole measures 3 (3 1/4, 3½) in. [7.5 (8.5, 9) cm].

Shape Neck
Next Row (RS):
Work 8 (8, 9) sts, join a 2nd ball of yarn and bind off center 16 (18, 18) sts for neck, work to end. Work even on both sides at the same time until armhole measures 3¾ (4, 4 1/4) in. [9.5 (10, 11) cm]. Bind off 8 (8, 9) sts each side for shoulders.

LEFT FRONT

Cast on 23 (24, 25) sts. Work in St st until piece measures same as Back to armholes.

Shape Armhole
Dec 1 st at armhole edge (beg of RS rows, end of WS rows) on next 4 rows – 19 (20, 21) sts. Work even until armhole measures 2¼ (2½, 2¾) in. [5.5 (6.5, 7) cm], end with a RS row.

Shape Neck
Next row (WS):
Bind off 6 (7, 7) sts, work to end. Continue to shape neck, binding off 2 sts from neck edge twice, 1 st once – 8 (8, 9) sts. Work even until armhole measures 3¾ (4, 4¼) in. [9.5 (10, 11) cm]. Bind off 8 (8, 9) sts for shoulder.

Place markers for buttons½ in. [1.5 cm] from top and lower edge of Left Front edge, and one at center.

RIGHT FRONT
Cast on 23 (24, 25) sts. Work in St st until piece measures½ in. [1.5 cm] from beg, end with a WS row.
Buttonhole row (RS): K 1, k2tog, yo, k to end of row. Work same as Left Front, reversing shaping and working buttonhole row opposite button markers.

SLEEVES
Cast on 22 (25, 28) sts. Work in St st and inc 1 st each edge every 3 (3½, 4) in. [7.5 (9, 10) cm] twice – 26 (29, 32) sts. Work even until piece measures 6½ (7½, 8½) in. [16.5 (19, 21.5) cm] from beg, end with a WS row.

Shape Cap
Bind off 3 (4, 4) sts at beg of next 6 rows – 8 (5, 8) sts. Bind off remaining sts.

FINISHING
Sew shoulder seams and sew in Sleeves. Sew side and Sleeve seams.

Edging
Working around neck edge from RS, pick up and k 1 st, * pick up and k 1 st, pass first st over 2nd st, repeat from *. Repeat for lower edge and each wrist edge.
Sew buttons where marked. Weave in ends.
