13 sts + 18 rows = 4 in. [10 cm] in Broken Rib pattern. When you match the gauge in a pattern, your project will be the size specified in the pattern and the materials specified in the pattern will be sufficient. The needle or hook size called for in the pattern is based on what the designer used, but it is not unusual for gauge to vary from person to person. If it takes you fewer stitches and rows to make your swatch, try using a smaller size hook or needles; if more stitches and rows, try a larger size hook or needles.

Making a Gauge Swatch

Broken Rib

Row 2: * K 3, purl 2, rep from *.
Rep Rows 1 and 2.

Open Stitch
Row 1:
K1, * yarn over, knit 2 together, rep from * to last st, k1.
Rep Row 1.

When increasing, be sure to incorporate new sts into pattern as established.

Cast on 16 sts. Working in Broken Rib, inc 1 st at neck edge every 6th row 8 times. At the same time, when piece measures 4 (5, 6) in. [10 (12.5, 15) cm] from beg, shape sleeve.

Shape Sleeve

Inc 1 st at armhole edge every 4th row 3 times, then inc 1 st at armhole edge every other row 6 (7, 8) times – 33 (34, 35) sts. Cast on 26 (28, 32) sts at armhole edge for the sleeve and work even on 59 (62, 67) sts in Broken Rib for 3 in. [7.5 cm].

Shape Neck
Continue in pattern as established, AT THE SAME TIME, dec 1 st at neck edge every other row 8 (9, 10) times – 51 (53, 57) sts. Place markers at each end of last row for the shoulder line. Work 2 rows in Broken Rib.

Inc 1 st at neck edge every other row 4 (5, 6) times, then cast on 6 (8, 10) sts at neck edge – 61 (66, 73) sts. Work 1 row in Broken Rib and place sts on holder.

Work same as Left Front, reversing all shaping.

Place sts of Left and Right sides onto needle so the neck edges adjoin – 122 (132, 146) sts. Continue even in Broken Rib across all sts until Back sleeve width matches Front sleeve width (measure from markers). Bind off 26 (28, 32) sts at beg of next 2 rows – 70 (76, 82) sts. Dec 1 st at each edge every other row 6 (7, 8) times, and then every 4th row 3 times – 52 (56, 60) sts. Work even in Broken Rib until piece measures same as Fronts. Bind off.

From RS, pick up 40 (44, 48) sts along sleeve edge. Work in Open Stitch for 7 in. [18 cm]. Bind off loosely.

Barcelona Bolero Reviewed by Alice on 2015-01-02 **
I have been knitting for a long time, and I also found this pattern frustrating!! I started it twice and I'm about to give up on it and try the other bolero suggested here.
