GAUGE:

13 sts + 18 rows = 4 in. [10 cm] in Broken Rib pattern. When you match the gauge in a pattern, your project will be the size specified in the pattern and the materials specified in the pattern will be sufficient. The needle or hook size called for in the pattern is based on what the designer used, but it is not unusual for gauge to vary from person to person. If it takes you fewer stitches and rows to make your swatch, try using a smaller size hook or needles; if more stitches and rows, try a larger size hook or needles.

Huh Reviewed by Jennifer Greenfield on 2012-11-09 *****
I'm perplexed by some of the reviews. I started crocheting when I was young, but this was the first thing I ever knit, and it's actually how I taught myself to knit. I didn't find it difficult at all once I got the hang of it. In fact, I couldn't believe it turned out, but it did and perfectly. Being a beginner, I was prepared to have one sleeve comically shorter than the other, but it looked great and fit perfectly. I don't have much of a frame of reference, so maybe there are simpler patterns out there, but like I said, I didn't have any problem, so I'd recommend this to anyone who wants to give it a try.
