GAUGE:
12 stitches + 15 rows = 4 in. [10 cm] before felting in single crochet or Stockinette stitch (knit every round). BE SURE TO CHECK YOUR GAUGE. When you match the gauge in a pattern, your project will be the size specified in the pattern and the materials specified in the pattern will be sufficient. If it takes you less stitches and rows to make a 4 in. [10 cm] square, try using a smaller size hook or needles; if more stitches and rows, try a larger size hook or needles.
Exact gauges is not imporant to this project.
INSTRUCTIONS
CROCHET BAG
Base
With A, chain 31.
Row 1: Single crochet in 2nd chain from hook and in each chain across - 30 single crochet.
Row 2: Chain 1, turn, single crochet in each single crochet across.
Repeat last row 6 more times.
Sides
Work 8 single crochet evenly spaced across short side of piece. Work 30 single crochet alongopposite side of beginning chain. Work 8 single crochet evenly spaced across remaining short side ofpiece - 76 single crochet around base.
Single crochet in each single crochet around until Bag measures 5 1/4 in. [14 cm] from base. Fastenoff A and join B. With B, continue in single crochet around until Bag measures 10 in. [25.5 cm] frombase. Fasten off.
KNIT BAG
Base
With A, cast on 30 stitches. Working back and forth on circular needle (just as when working onstraight needles), knit 4 rows. Pick up and knit 8 stitches along short side of piece, 30 stitchesalong cast on edge and 8 stitches along remaining short side - 76 stitches around base.
Sides
Place marker for beginning of round and join, being careful not to twist stitches. Working inthe round, knit every round until Bag measures 5 1/4 in. [14 cm] from base. Change to B. With B, knitevery round until Bag measures 10 in. [25.5 cm] from base. Bind off.
FINISHING
Weave in ends.
FELTING
Wash by machine on a hot wash/cold rinse cycle with detergent and several pieces of clothing toagitate. To felt additionally, dry by machine on a regular setting until almost dry. Remove fromdryer and pull into shape. For more about felting, click here.
Handle
After felting, cut a 3 1/4 in. [8.75 cm] slit centered on back of Bag, about 1 1/4 in. [3.75 cm] downfrom top edge. Repeat on front.
