Shell Stitch Wrap-Around Sweater

GAUGE:

2½ shell repeats = 3 in. [7.5 cm], 7 rows shell st pattern = 4 in. [10 cm] BE SURE TO CHECK YOUR GAUGE. When you match the gauge in a pattern, your project will be the size specified in the pattern and the materials specified in the pattern will be sufficient. If it takes you fewer stitches and rows to make a 4 in. [10 cm] square, try using a smaller size hook or needles; if more stitches and rows, try a larger size hook or needles.

STITCH EXPLANATION:

Shell: (3 dc, ch 1, 3 dc) in indicated st or ch-sp.
Increase Shell (incShell):
(3 dc, ch 1, 2 dc, ch 1, 2 dc, ch 1, 3 dc) in indicated ch-sp (counts as 3 Shells).
Shell in next shell: Work shell in ch-1 sp of next shell or next ch-1 sp of incShell.

NOTES:

Cardigan is worked from the neck down.

SWEATER
Ch 44 (44, 50, 56, 56).
Row 1: Shell in 7th ch from hook (6 skipped ch count as dc, ch 3), ch 2, *sk 5 ch, shell in next ch, ch 2; rep from * across; ch 3, dc in last ch -- 7 (7, 8, 9, 9) shells.
Row 2: Ch 6 (counts as dc, ch 3 here and throughout), turn, shell in ch-3 sp before first shell, (ch 2, shell in next shell) across, ch 2, shell in last ch-3 sp; ch 3, dc in 3rd ch of beg ch-6 -- 9 (9, 10, 11, 11) shells.
Row 3: Ch 6, turn, incShell in first shell, (ch 2, shell in next shell), ch 2, incShell in next shell, (ch 2, shell in next shell) 3 (3, 4, 5, 5) times, ch 2, incShell in next shell, (ch 2, shell in next shell), ch 2, incShell in last shell; ch 3, dc in 3rd ch of beg ch-6 -- 17 (17, 18, 19, 19) shells.

Note: One incShell counts as 3 shells.

Place a marker in center ch-1 sp of each incShell. Move markers to next row as work progresses.
Rows 4-6: Ch 6, turn, (shell in next shell, ch 2) across to last shell, shell in last shell; ch 3, dc in 3rd ch of beg ch-6.
Row 7: Ch 6, turn, 3 dc in ch-3 sp before first shell, *ch 2, (shell in next shell, ch 2) across to marked shell, incShell in marked shell; repeat from * 3 more times, (ch 2, shell in next shell) across, ch 2, 3 dc in last ch-3 sp; ch 3, dc in 3rd ch of beg ch-6 -- 25 (25, 26, 27, 27) shells.

Ch 6, turn, shell in ch-3 sp before first shell, ch 2, (shell in next shell, ch 2) across to second marked shell (do not increase in first marked shell), incShell in marked shell, (ch 2, shell in next shell) across to next marked shell, ch 2, incShell in marked shell, (ch 2, shell in next shell) across (do not increase in last marked shell); end with shell in last ch-3 sp, ch 3, dc in 3rd ch of beg ch-6 -- 53 shells.
Row 21: Repeat Row 4, removing markers.

Divide for Sleeves and Body
Row 1:
Ch 6, turn, (shell in next shell, ch 2) 5 (6, 7, 7, 8) times for Front, *sk 7 (7, 8, 9, 10) shells for Sleeve, hold first and last skipped ch-2 sps together and working through both sps at the same time work 2 dc in sp for underarm, place marker in this sp, ch 2 *, (shell in next shell, ch 2) 11 (11,12, 15, 17) times for Back; repeat from * to *; shell in next shell, (ch 2, shell in next shell) to end for Front; ch 3, dc in 3rd ch of beg ch-6 -- 21 (23, 26, 29, 33) Body shells, 7 (7, 8, 9, 10) shells for each Sleeve. Do not fasten off.

Body
Working only on Body shells.
Row 1: Ch 6, turn, (shell in next shell, ch 2) across to last shell, shell in last shell; ch 3, dc in 3rd ch of beg ch-6 -- 21 (23, 26, 29, 33) shells.
Repeat Row 1 until piece measures 15 (15½, 15½, 16, 16) in. [38 (39.5, 39.5, 40.5, 40.5) cm] from beg.
Next Row:
Ch 6, turn, (shell in next shell, ch 2) 6 (7, 8, 9, 10) times, incShell in next shell, (ch 2, shell in next shell) 7 (7, 8, 9, 11) times, ch 2, incShell in next shell, (ch 2, shell in next shell) to end, ch 3, dc in 3rd ch of beg ch-6 -- 25 (27, 30, 33, 37) shells.

Repeat Row 1 until piece measures 33½ (34½, 35, 36½, 38) in. [85 (87.5, 89, 92.5, 96.5) cm] from beg. Do not fasten off.

Front Edging
Row 1:
Working in ends of rows along front opening, ch 1, *3 sc in first ch-sp, 2 sc in next ch-sp; repeat from * to neck edge. Working in opposite side of foundation ch, work 1 sc in base of each shell and 4 sc in each ch-5 sp around neck; working in ends of rows along front opening, work *3 sc in first ch-sp, 2 sc in next ch-sp; repeat from * to lower edge. Make sure you have an odd number of sts.
Row 2: Ch 1, turn, sc in each sc.
Row 3: Ch 4, turn, sk first 2 sc, dc in next st, * ch 1, sk 1 st, dc in next st; repeat from * across.
Row 4: Ch 4, turn, dc in next dc, * ch 1, dc in next dc; repeat from *, ending ch 1, dc in turning ch.
Row 5: Ch 1, sc in first st, *sc in ch-1 sp, sc in next dc; repeat from * across.
Row 6: Ch 1, turn, sc in each sc. Fasten off.

Sleeve (make 2)
From right side and working only on Sleeve shells, join yarn in first shell following marked underarm sp.
Rnd 1: Ch 4 (counts as dc, ch 1), 3 dc in same shell, ch 2, (shell in next shell, ch 2) around to marked underarm sp, work 2 dc in marked underarm ch-sp, ch 2, 2 dc in first shell; join with sl st in 3rd ch of beg ch-4 -- 7 (7, 8, 9, 10) shells.
Rnd 2: Sl st into first shell, ch 4, 3 dc in same ch-sp, ch 2, (shell in next shell, ch 2) around, sk underarm, 2 dc in first shell; join with sl st in 3rd ch of beg ch-4.
Rnd 3: Sl st into first shell, ch 4, 3 dc in same ch-sp, ch 2, (shell in next shell, ch 2) around, 2 dc in first shell; join with sl st in 3rd ch of beg ch-4.
Repeat Rnd 3 until Sleeve measures 16½ in. [42 cm] from underarm. Fasten off.

BELT
Ch 8.
Row 1: Sc in 2nd ch from hook and each ch across -- 7 sts.
Row 2: Ch 3 (counts as dc here and throughout), turn, dc in next st, (ch 1, sk 1 sts, dc in next st) twice, dc in last st.
Row 3: Ch 3, turn, dc in next st, (ch 1, sk ch-sp, dc in next st) twice, dc in last st.
Repeat Row 3 until Belt measures 60 (64, 68, 72, 76) in. [152.5 (162.5, 172.5, 183, 193) cm].
Last Row: Ch 1, turn, sc in each st and ch-1 sp across. Fasten off.

BELT LOOPS (make 2)
Ch 16. Sc in 2nd ch from hook, sc in next 13 ch, 3 sc in last ch, turn to work along opposite side of beginning chain, sc in next 14 ch, join with sl st in first sc. Fasten off. Sew a belt loop to each side of Sweater at waist.

FINISHING
Weave in ends
