GAUGE:

20 sts + 28 rows = 4 in. (10 cm) in Color Stripe Pattern. BE SURE TO CHECK YOUR GAUGE. When you match the gauge in a pattern, your project will be the size specified in the pattern and the materials specified in the pattern will be sufficient. If it takes you fewer stitches and rows to make a 4 in. [10 cm] square, try using a smaller size hook or needles; if more stitches and rows, try a larger size hook or needles.

STITCH EXPLANATION:

K1, p1 Rib Row 1: *K1, p1; rep from *. Row 2: K the k sts and p the p sts. Rep Row 2 for K1, p1 Rib. Color Stripe Pattern Rows 1 and 3 (RS): With B, knit. Rows 2 and 4: With B, purl. Rows 5-12: With C, knit (Garter st). Rows 13 and 15: With B, knit. Rows 14 and 16: With B, purl. Rows 17-24: With A, knit (Garter st). Rep Rows 1-24 for Color Stripe Pattern.

BACK
With A, cast on 50 (56, 60, 68, 76) sts. Work in k1, p1 Rib for 1 in. (2.5 cm), end with a RS row. Purl 1 row, then work in Color Stripe Pattern until piece measures 10½ (11½, 12½, 13 1/2, 14½) in. (26.5 (29, 32, 34.5, 37) cm) from beg, end with a WS row.

Shape Neck
Continue in Color Stripe Pattern across 13 (15, 17, 20, 24) sts. Join a second ball of yarn and bind off center 24 (26, 26, 28, 28) sts, work across remaining 13 (15, 17, 20, 24) sts. Working both sides at once, with separate balls of yarn, work in pattern until piece measures 11 (12, 13, 14, 15) in. (28 (30.5, 33, 35.5, 38) cm) from beg. Bind off.

LEFT FRONT
With A, cast on 22 (24, 28, 32, 36) sts. Work as for Back until piece measures 9 (10, 11, 12, 13) in. (23 (25.5, 28, 30.5, 33) cm) from beg, end with a RS row.

Shape Neck
Bind off 5 (5, 7, 8, 8) sts, finish row. Continue in Color Stripe Pattern, AT THE SAME TIME, dec 1 st at neck edge every other row 4 times – 13 (15, 17, 20, 24) sts. Work even until piece measures same length as Back. Bind off.

RIGHT FRONT
Work as for Left Front, reversing shaping.

SLEEVES
With A, cast on 28 (30, 32, 32, 36) sts. Work k1, p1 Rib and Color Stripe Pattern as for Back, AT THE SAME TIME, increase 1 st each side every 4th row 7 (7, 7, 8, 6) times, then every 6th row 3 (4, 5, 6, 8) times – 48 (52, 56, 60, 64) sts. Work even until piece measures 9 (10, 11, 12, 13) in. (23 (25.5, 28, 30.5, 33) cm) from beg. Bind off.

FINISHING
Sew shoulder seams.

Neckband
From RS with A, beg at Right Front, pick up and k 60 (64, 64, 68, 68) sts evenly spaced around neck edge. Work in k1, p1 Rib for 1 in. (2.5 cm). Bind off.
Buttonband
From RS with A, pick up 50 (54, 60, 64, 70) sts evenly spaced along Right Front edge for boys or Left Front edge for girls.
Work in k1, p1 Rib for 1 in. (2.5 cm). Bind off.
Buttonhole Band
From RS with A, pick up 50 (54, 60, 64, 70) sts evenly spaced along opposite Front edge and work 4 rows in k1, p1 Rib.
Buttonhole Row: K 2 (2, 1, 3, 2), k2tog, yo, *k 9 (10, 12, 12, 14), k2tog, yo, rep from *; end k 2 (2, 1, 3, 2).
Bind off. Mark Front and Back edges 4½ (5, 5½, 6, 6½) in. (11.5 (12.5, 14, 15, 16.5) cm) from shoulder seams. Sew Sleeves between markers. Sew side and Sleeve seams. Sew buttons opposite buttonholes.
