GAUGE:

20 sts + 28 rows = 4 in. [10 cm] in pattern stitch. When you match the gauge in a pattern, your project will be the size specified in the pattern and the materials specified in the pattern will be sufficient. The needle or hook size called for in the pattern is based on what the designer used, but it is not unusual for gauge to vary from person to person. If it takes you fewer stitches and rows to make your swatch, try using a smaller size hook or needles; if more stitches and rows, try a larger size hook or needles.

Striped Cardi Reviewed by p. riggio on 2013-01-04 **
I have checked my gauge and this sweater, in a 24 mos size, is wider by about 2" than a 4T sweater from the department store. I knit it once and tore it all out and tried to knit it again more tightly, but it still comes out very large. Very disappointed to have to make it a 3rd time and adjust the number or stitches to make it smaller.
