Warm Wool Mittens

GAUGE:

18 sts = 4 in. [10 cm] in St st (k every rnd) with larger needles. BE SURE TO CHECK YOUR GAUGE. When you match the gauge in a pattern, your project will be the size specified in the pattern and the materials specified in the pattern will be sufficient. If it takes you fewer stitches and rows to make a 4 in. [10 cm] square, try using a smaller size hook or needles; if more stitches and rows, try a larger size hook or needles.

STITCH EXPLANATION:

K1, p1 Rib
Rnd 1: *
K1, p1; rep from *.
Rnd 2: K the k sts and p the p sts.
Repeat Rnd 2 for K1, p1 Rib.

SINGLE MITTEN (make 2)
With smaller needles and A, cast on 36 sts. Divide sts evenly onto 4 needles and join, being careful not to twist sts. Place marker for beg of rnd.
Next Rnd: With A, work in K1, p1 Rib.
Next Rnd: With B, knit.
With B, continue in k1, p1 Rib until piece measures 3 in. [7.5 cm] from beg. Change to larger needles and work in St st (k every rnd) until piece measures 3½ in. [9 cm] from beg.

Thumb shaping
Rnd 1:
K17, inc 1 in next st, k to end – 37 sts.
Rnd 2: K17, place marker, k3, place marker, k to end.
Rnd 3: K to first marker, slip marker, inc 1 in next st, inc 1 in next st, k1, slip marker, k to end – 5 sts between markers.
Rnd 4: Knit.
Rnd 5: K to first marker, slip marker, inc 1 in next st, k to 2 sts before 2nd marker, inc 1 in next st, k1, slip marker, k to end.
Rnd 6: Knit.
Rep last 2 rnds until there are 15 sts between markers.
Next Rnd: K to first marker, remove marker, k1, slip next 13 sts to a holder, k1, remove marker, k to end.
Work even in St st on 36 sts until piece measures 10 in. [25.5 cm] from beg.

Shape Top
Rnd 1:
*K4, k2tog; rep from * around – 30 sts.
Rnds 2, 4, 6 and 8: Knit.
Rnd 3: *K3, k2tog; rep from * around – 24 sts.
Rnd 5: *K2, k2tog; rep from * around – 18 sts.
Rnd 7: *K1, k2tog; rep from * around – 12 sts.
Rnd 9: K2tog around – 6 sts.
Cut yarn, leaving a long tail. Draw tail through rem sts and pull tightly together to secure. Fasten off.

Thumb
Divide sts from holder evenly onto 3 needles. From right side, join yarn. Pick up and k 3 sts along edge of hand, then k rem sts – 16 sts. Place marker for beg of rnd.
Next Rnd: K3tog, k to end of rnd – 14 sts.
Work even in St st until Thumb measures 2¼ in. [5.5 cm].\
Next Rnd: *K2tog around – 7 sts.
Cut yarn, leaving a long tail. Draw tail through rem sts and pull tightly together to secure. Fasten off.

FINISHING

Weave in ends.
