GAUGE:

15 sts + 21 rows = 4 in. (10 cm) in Stockinette st (k on RS, p on WS). When you match the gauge in a pattern, your project will be the size specified in the pattern and the materials specified in the pattern will be sufficient. The needle or hook size called for in the pattern is based on what the designer used, but it is not unusual for gauge to vary from person to person. If it takes you fewer stitches and rows to make your swatch, try using a smaller size hook or needles; if more stitches and rows, try a larger size hook or needles.

Making a Gauge Swatch

BODY
Cast on 112 (116, 120) sts.
Row 1 (RS): Sl 1, k to end of row.
Row 2: Sl 1, p to end of row.
Rep last 2 rows until piece measures 13 (14, 15) in. (33 (35.5, 38) cm) from beg, end with a WS row.
Armhole Shaping
Next Row (RS): K 52 (54, 56), bind off next 30 (32, 34) sts, k rem 30 sts.
Working over last 30 sts, work 5 rows in established pattern. Cut yarn and reattach to rem 52 (54, 56) sts at armhole edge. Beg with a WS row, work 5 rows in St st, then cast on 30 (32, 34) sts above bound-off armhole edge and k last 30 sts - 112 (116, 120) sts. Work even for 14 1/2 (16 1/2, 18 1/2) in. (37 (42, 47) cm), end with a WS row. Rep armhole shaping. Work even for 13 (14, 15) in. (33 (35.5, 38) cm). Bind off.

SLEEVE (make 2)
Cast on 34 (34, 36) sts. Work in St st (k on RS, p on WS), AT THE SAME TIME, increase 1 st each edge every 6th row 10 (9, 8) times, then every 8th row 5 (7, 8) times - 64 (66, 68) sts. Work even until Sleeve measures 21 (23, 25) in. (53.5 (58.5, 63.5) cm). Bind off.

FINISHING
Sew Sleeve seams. Sew Sleeves to armholes. Weave in ends.

Jacket Deconstructed Reviewed by Ann Snoeyenbos on 2014-01-29 *****
I'm working on my fourth one of these. I love this jacket because it's more stylish than most cardigans. It keeps my neck warm when needed but still opens completely when the heat's on. I use one or two shawl sticks when I need max warmth but it drapes nicely when open

The knitting is simple--good for public transit and tv watching. I've made all four in Vanna's Choice but I'm planning to make a couple more in lighter yarns (silk + cotton) for spring.
