GAUGE:

20 sc + 27 rows = 4 in. [10 cm]. BE SURE TO CHECK YOUR GAUGE. When you match the gauge in a pattern, your project will be the size specified in the pattern and the materials specified in the pattern will be sufficient. If it takes you less stitches and rows to make a 4 in. [10 cm] square, try using a smaller size hook or needles; if more stitches and rows, try a larger size hook or needles.

STITCH EXPLANATION:

sc2tog (sc dec) (Insert hook into next st and draw up a loop) twice, yarn over and draw through all 3 loops on hook – 1 sc decreased.

NOTES:

Rounds are worked in continuous spirals; do not join and do not turn. Use marker to indicate beg of rnds.

HEAD
With A, beginning at center of face, ch 2.
Rnd 1: Work 6 sc in first chain. Mark first st for beg of rnd; move marker up each rnd.
Rnd 2: Work 2 sc in each sc around – 12 sc.
Rnd 3: *2 sc in next sc, sc in next sc; rep from * around – 18 sc.
Rnd 4: *2 sc in next sc, sc in each of next 2 sc; rep from * around – 24 sc.
Rnd 5: *2 sc in next sc, sc in each of next 3 sc; rep from * around – 30 sc.

Sew 2 buttons to face for eyes. If doll is for a small child, substitute 2 felt circles for button eyes. With A, embroider a few straight stitches onto center of first rnd for nose. With floss, embroider straight stitch smile several rnds below nose. With cotton swab, apply a small amount of blush to cheeks.
