Baby Sweater

GAUGE:

16 dc + 8 rows = 4 in. (10 cm) BE SURE TO CHECK YOUR GAUGE. When you match the gauge in a pattern, your project will be the size specified in the pattern and the materials specified in the pattern will be sufficient. If it takes you less stitches and rows to make a 4 in. [10 cm] square, try using a smaller size hook or needles; if more stitches and rows, try a larger size hook or needles.

STITCH EXPLANATION:

PATTERN STITCH (multiple 4 + 1 sts)

Puff Stitch
Row 1 (RS): Sc in 2nd ch from hook and in each ch across.
Row 2: Ch 1, turn, (sc, 3 dc) in first sc, *sk next 3 sc, (sc, 3 dc) in next sc; rep from * across to last 4 sc, sk next 3 sc, sc in last sc.
Row 3: Ch 1, turn, (sc, 3 dc) in first sc, *sk next 3 dc, (sc, 3 dc) in next sc; rep from * across to last 4 sts, sk next 3 dc, sc in last sc.
Rep Row 3 for Puff st.

STRIPE SEQUENCE

*Work 2 rows with A, 1 row with B, 1 row with C, 2 rows with A, 1 row with C, 1 row with B; rep from * for Stripe Sequence.

NOTES:

To change color, work last st of old color until 2 loops remain on hook, yarn over with new color, draw yarn through 2 loops on hook to complete stitch.

BACK
With A, ch 50 (54, 58, 62).
Beg with Row 1, work in Puff st and Stripe Sequence until piece measures 5 1/4 (5¾, 6 1/4, 6¾) in. (13.5 (14.5, 16, 17) cm) from beg – 49 (53, 57, 61) sts.
Shape Armhole
Continue Puff st and Stripe Sequence as established.
Next 2 Rows: Turn, sl st in first 4 sts, *(sc, 3 dc) in next sc, sk next 3 dc; rep from * across to last st, sc in last st – 41 (45, 49, 53) sts.
Continue as established until armholes measure 4¾ (5, 5½, 5¾) in. (12 (12.5, 14, 14.5) cm).
Next Row: Ch 3 (counts as first dc), turn, dc in next 12 (13, 15, 16) sts for button band on left shoulder; leave remaining sts unworked. Fasten off.

FRONT
Work as for Back until armholes measure 2¾ (3, 3½, 3¾) in. (7 (7.5, 9, 9.5) cm).

Shape Neck
Continue Puff st and Stripe Sequence as established.
Next Row:
Work first 17 (18, 19, 21) sts; leave remaining sts unworked.
Next Row: Ch 1, turn, sc in first 4 (5, 6, 4) sts, work in Puff st across.
Next Row: Work first 13 (13, 13, 17) sts in Puff st, sc in next 0 (1, 3, 0) sts; leave remaining sts unworked – 13 (14, 16, 17) sts.
Next Row: Ch 1, turn, sc in first 0 (1, 3, 0) sts, work in Puff st across.
Next 2 Rows: Rep last 2 rows. Fasten off.
Next Row: Sl st across center 7 (9, 9, 11) sts, join yarn in next st and ch 1, sc in next 3 (2, 3, 3) sts, work in Puff st and Stripe Sequence across.
Next Row: Work first 13 (13, 13, 17) sts as established, sc in next 0 (1, 3, 0) sts; leave remaining sts unworked – 13 (14, 16, 17) sts.
Next Row: Ch 1, turn, sc in first 0 (1, 3, 0) sts, work as established across.
Next Row: Work first 13 (13, 13, 17) sts as established, sc in next 0 (1, 3, 0) sts.
Next 2 Rows: Rep last 2 rows. Fasten off.

SLEEVE (make 2)
With A, ch 21 (23, 25, 27).
Row 1:
Sc in 2nd ch from hook and in each ch across – 20 (22, 24, 26) sc.
Row 2: Ch 3, turn, dc in each st across.
Row 3: Ch 3, turn, 2 dc in first st, dc across to last st, 2 dc in last st – 22 (24, 26, 28) dc.
Change to B for left Sleeve and C for right Sleeve, and continue with this color only.
Row 4: Rep Row 3 – 24 (26, 28, 30) dc.
Row 5: Ch 3, turn, dc in each dc across.
Working in one color, rep Rows 3-5 until 13 (14, 16, 17) rows total have been worked – 36 (38, 44, 46) dc.

Shape Cap
Next 4 Rows:
Turn, sl st in first 3 sts, ch 3, dc in each st across. Fasten off

FINISHING

Sew right shoulder seam. Lap left front shoulder over back and sew at armhole edge. Sew in Sleeves. Sew side and Sleeve seams. Sew on buttons. Use spaces between sts as buttonholes.

Neckband

From RS, join A with sl st at neck edge of Front left shoulder.

Row 1: Ch 3, work 1 round dc evenly spaced around neck edge. Fasten off.

Weave in ends.
