15 sts + 18 rows = 4 in. (10 cm) in St st (k on RS, p on WS) before felting. When you match the gauge in a pattern, your project will be the size specified in the pattern and the materials specified in the pattern will be sufficient. The needle or hook size called for in the pattern is based on what the designer used, but it is not unusual for gauge to vary from person to person. If it takes you fewer stitches and rows to make your swatch, try using a smaller size hook or needles; if more stitches and rows, try a larger size hook or needles.

Making a Gauge Swatch

Blanket Stitch
Secure yarn on back of work. Working from left to right, carry needle and yarn around from back to front, allow yarn to wrap loosely over edge of work. *Insert needle from front to back approx. 1/2 in. (1.5 cm) from previous stitch and from edge of work, catching yarn wrap with needle to form a "corner". Gently tighten stitch; rep from * along edge.

Embroidered Chain Stitch
Bring needle from back to front, hold thread toward you with left thumb, *bring needle back down through same hole, bringing tip to front a short space forward. Pull thread through loop. Rep from * to form chain st.

With A, cast on 53 sts. Work 50 rows in St st (k on RS, p on WS).
Bind off.

With B and crochet hook, ch 10. Fasten off.

Weave in ends.

Wash by machine on a hot wash/cold rinse cycle with detergent and several pieces of clothing to agitate. To felt additionally, dry by machine on a regular setting until almost dry. Remove from dryer and pull to approx 10 x 6 in. (25.5 x 15 cm).

Fold Purse to 4 x 6 in. (10 x 15 cm), leaving a 2 in. (5 cm) flap. With B, sew side seams with Blanket st. Work Blanket st around edges of flap. With B, embroider swirled dots with chain st. Sew Loop to WS of flap. Sew button opposite loop.

I made one with leftover fisher mans yarn from another project and it was easy to make. It's my first time trying to felt anything but it was fine. It has turned out a bit bigger than suggested, which is just fine by me. I finished by just sewing up the sides and sewing on a clasp instead of blanket stitch and button/toggle. I might add some decorative stitching...undecided right now. Not sure what I will use it for yet but I will definitely make more!
