Oversized Beret
Lion Brand® Wool-Ease® Thick & Quick®
GAUGE:
10 sts + 20 rows = 4 in. (10 cm) in Double Knit with larger needles. BE SURE TO CHECK YOUR GAUGE. When you match the gauge in a pattern, your project will be the size specified in the pattern and the materials specified in the pattern will be sufficient. If it takes you fewer stitches and rows to make a 4 in. [10 cm] square, try using a smaller size hook or needles; if more stitches and rows, try a larger size hook or needles.

I agree that this pattern started going wrong with the decrease rows. I am nearly finished knitting it, and it clearly is not going to sew up properly because the directions end up with the decerases only being taken on one side. After the first decrease row, the directions state "Next 3 rows: work even in double knit." This in not clear and causes all the increases to occur on the same side. The end result is asymmetrical and lopsided.
Overall, the band and the double knit stitch look nice, but the decreases should be taken evenly on alternating sides to create a finished piece that is symmetical for sewing.
