GAUGE:

One square = 8 x 8 in. (23 x 23 cm). BE SURE TO CHECK YOUR GAUGE. When you match the gauge in a pattern, your project will be the size specified in the pattern and the materials specified in the pattern will be sufficient. If it takes you fewer stitches and rows to make a 4 in. [10 cm] square, try using a smaller size hook or needles; if more stitches and rows, try a larger size hook or needles.

STITCH EXPLANATION:

Beg CL (Beginning Cluster) - ch 4 (counts as tr), [Yarn over hook twice, insert hook into ring, draw up a loop, yarn over and draw through 2 loops, yarn over and draw through 2 loops] repeat 2 more times – 4 tr and 4 loops on hook. Yarn over and draw through all 4 loops. CL (Cluster) - [Yarn over hook twice, insert hook into ring, draw up a loop, yarn over and draw through 2 loops, yarn over and draw through 2 loops – tr] repeat 3 times more – 4 tr and 5 loops on hook. Yarn over and draw through all 5 loops.

AFGHAN
Square 1 (make 4)
With A, ch 8. Join with sl st to form a ring.
Rnd 1: Beg CL, *ch 4, CL; repeat from * 6 times, ch 4, join with sl st in 4^th ch of beg ch 4. Fasten off A.
Rnd 2: Join B in any ch-4 sp, ch 3 (counts as dc), 3 dc into same ch-4 sp, *4 dc into next ch-4 sp, ch 6, **4 dc into next ch-4 sp; rep from * twice then from * to ** once more, join with sl st in 3rd ch of beg ch 3.
Rnd 3: Ch 3 (counts as 1 dc), dc in each of next 7 dc, *[3 dc, ch 3, 3 dc] into next ch-6 sp, ** dc in each of next 8 dc; rep from * twice then from * to ** once more, join with sl st in 3rd ch of beg ch 3. Fasten off B.
Rnd 4: Join C in any ch-3 sp, ch 3 (counts as dc), [1 dc, ch 3, 2 dc] into same sp, * dc in each of next 14 dc, **[2 dc, ch 3, 2 dc] into next ch-3 sp; rep from * twice then from * to ** once more, join with sl st in 3rd ch of beg ch 3. Fasten off C.
Rnd 5: Join D, ch 1, sc into each dc of previous round, working [2 sc, ch 1, 2 sc] in each ch-3 sp, join with sl st beg sc. Fasten off.

Square 2 (make 4)
Make same as Square 1, but using colors B, C, D, and E.

Square 3 (make 4)
Make same as Square 1, but using colors C, D, E, and F.

Square 4 (make 4)
Make same as Square 1, but using colors D, E, F, and G.

Square 5 (make 4)
Make same as Square 1, but using colors E, F, G, and H.

Square 6 (make 4)
Make same as Square 1, but using colors F, G, H, and A.

Square 7 (make 3)
Make same as Square 1, but using colors G, H, A, and B.

Square 8 (make 3)
Make same as Square 1, but using colors H, A, B, and C.

FINISHING
Lay squares out on a flat surface to determine a pleasing arrangement of 5 rows of 6 squares each. Sew squares together.

Edging
Rnd 1: From right side, join H with sl st along edge of Afghan. Ch 1, work sc evenly around edge of Afghan, working 3 sc at each corner. Fasten off.
Rnd 2: From wrong side, join F with sl st along edge of Afghan. Ch 1, work sc in each sc around. Fasten off.
Weave in ends.
