Squares Afghan

Lion Brand® Vanna's Choice®

GAUGE:

13 half double crochet and 9 rows = 4 in. (10 cm). BE SURE TO CHECK YOUR GAUGE. When you match the gauge in a pattern, your project will be the size specified in the pattern and the materials specified in the pattern will be sufficient. If it takes you fewer stitches and rows to make a 4 in. [10 cm] square, try using a smaller size hook or needles; if more stitches and rows, try a larger size hook or needles.

SQUARE (make 2 squares with each color)
Chain 27.
Row 1: Half double crochet in 3rd chain from hook and in each chain across.
Row 2: Chain 2, turn, half double crochet in each stitch across.
Repeat Row 2 until square measures 8 in. (20.5 cm). Fasten off.

FINISHING
Following chart, arrange squares, alternating the direction of every other square. Sew squares together.
From right side, join J with a slip stitch anywhere along edge of Afghan.
Rnd 1: Chain 2, work half double crochet evenly spaced around edge of Afghan, working 3 half double crochet at each corner. Fasten off.
From wrong side, join M with slip stitch along edge of Afghan.
Rnd 2: Chain 2, work half double crochet in each half double crochet around.
Fasten off. Weave in ends.

This was my first project so I had some challenges, of course. What I really wish would've been included in the pattern is what color I should sew the blocks together with; it would've been so helpful to see the back of the afghan. I was going to use one of the colors from the border but it didn't look right. I ended up switching colors complementary to each block but it was a huge ordeal. I also wish that the pattern would've said how many stitches should be across each row. Obviously I'm a very inexperienced crocheter, so when a pattern is labeled "easy", it should be written with the minutest details.
