Seed Stitch Cardigan
Lion Brand® Cotton-Ease®
GAUGE:
17 sts + 24 rows = 4 in. (10 cm) in St st (k on RS, p on WS). BE SURE TO CHECK YOUR GAUGE. When you match the gauge in a pattern, your project will be the size specified in the pattern and the materials specified in the pattern will be sufficient. If it takes you fewer stitches and rows to make a 4 in. [10 cm] square, try using a smaller size hook or needles; if more stitches and rows, try a larger size hook or needles.

Seed Stitch Cardigan Reviewed by Norma Matthews on 2011-08-24
I am not a very advanced knitter, but I loved making this cardigan. It was easy to knit up and it came out looking even better than the illustration. I made it in ecru with taupe trim and pearl buttons for my 4-year-old grand-daughter and have just begun a second one in ecru with dark brown trim and brass buttons for her 7 year-old sister. Since the pattern is so simple, I find I can readily enlarge it to fit the older child. Furthermore, I plan to go on and make a third version in red with navy trim and brass buttons for my 8-1/2-year-old grandson. The only caution I can offer to other knitters is to be sure to block the pieces carefully (I steamed them) before joining. The edges curl rather badly otherwise and would compromise a nice, even seaming. The trick to making this project look really professional seems to lie in getting the seaming just right. Also, when joining the contrasting collar, I found it necessary to pick up and knit the first row in the same ecru color for one row before beginning the seed stitch in the contrast color in order to round out the stair-step bind-offs at the neck. That was the only modification I had to make in the interest of getting a nice crisp finish. I can't wait to create the second and third versions of this very nice pattern.
