GAUGE: Exact gauge is not essential for this project. BE SURE TO CHECK YOUR GAUGE. When you match the gauge in a pattern, your project will be the size specified in the pattern and the materials specified in the pattern will be sufficient. If it takes you less stitches and rows to make a 4 in. [10 cm] square, try using a smaller size hook or needles; if more stitches and rows, try a larger size hook or needles.
STITCH EXPLANATION: | sc2tog (sc dec) Insert hook into stitch and draw up a loop. Insert hook into next stitch and draw up a loop. Yarn over, draw through all 3 loops on hook. |

LEAF (Make 14 with A and 7 with B)
With larger hook and A or B, ch 3. Sc in 2nd ch from hook and in last ch - 2 sc. Ch 1, turn.
Sc in each sc. Ch 1, turn.
Next Row: Work 2 sc in first sc (inc made), sc in each sc across to last sc, inc 1 in last sc. Ch 1, turn.
Rep last row 3 more times - 10 sc.
Work even in sc for 5 rows.
Next Row: Slip st in first 2 sts, in next 6 sc, skip last 2 sts. Ch 1, turn.
Next Row: Sc2tog over first 2 sc, sc in each sc across. Ch 1, turn.
Rep last row 4 times. Fasten off and weave in ends. Felt Leaves according to directions below.
FELTING
Place pieces in a mesh laundry bag or pillowcase and wash by machine on a hot wash/cold rinse cycle with detergent and several pieces of clothing to agitate. To felt additionally, dry by machine on a regular setting until almost dry. Remove from dryer and pull into shape.
SKULL (Finished size 3 in [7.5 cm])
NOTES
1) Skull is worked from the top down in continuous spirals. Do not join or turn. Place a marker to indicate beginning of round and move the marker up as each round is completed.
2) Work in back loops only, unless otherwise indicated.
With smaller hook and C, ch 2; join with sl st in first ch to form a ring.
Rnd 1: Work 3 sc in ring.
Rnds 2 and 3: Working in back loops only, 2 sc in each st around - 12 sc at end of Rnd 3.
Note: Continue to work in back loops only, unless otherwise indicated.
Rnd 4: (Sc in next st, 2 sc in next st) around - 18 sc.
Rnd 5: (Hdc in next 2 sts, 2 hdc in next st) around - 24 hdc.
Rnd 6: Hdc in next 8 sts, 2 hdc in next st (temple), hdc in next 6 sts, 2 hdc in next st (temple), hdc in last 8 sts - 26 sts.
Rnd 7 (shape eyes): Work 2 hdc in first st, dc in next 10 sts, ch 9 (eye socket), sk 2 sts, sl st in next st, turn, sl st in last ch of ch-9 sp, turn, ch 9 (eye socket), sk 2 sts, dc in last 10 sts.
Rnd 8 (shape nose): Dc in next 11 sts, sk next st, sl st in 3rd ch of next ch-9 sp, sl st in next 2 ch, ch 7 (nose), sl st in 5th ch of next ch-9 sp, sl st in next 2 ch, sk first dc after ch-9 sp, dc in next 4 sts, sk next st, dc in last 4 sts.
Rnd 9: (Sk next st, dc in next 4 sts) twice, sk next st, sl st in next st (first sl st of eye socket), sk next 2 sl sts, sl st in each ch of ch-7 sp, sk next 2 sl sts, sl st in next st (last sl st of next eye socket), hdc in next 5 sts, sk next st, hdc in next 2 sts.
Rnd 10 (shape top teeth): Hdc in next st, sk next st, hdc in next 5 sts, sk next st, sl st in next 2 sts; you are now at face of Skull; (ch 3, sl st in 3rd ch from hook, sk next st, sl st in next 2 sts) twice, ch 3, sl st in 3rd ch from hook (3 teeth made), sk next st, sc in next 4 sts, sk next st, sc in next 2 sts.
Rnd 11 (shape lower jaw): Sc in next 2 sts, sk next st, sc in next 4 sts, ch 20, sk sts of upper jaw and sl st in 2nd sc after last upper tooth, turn, sc in st between last ch of ch-20 of lower jaw and tooth; working across ch-20 sp, sc in next 4 ch, sk next 2 ch, sc in next 2 ch, ch 3, sl st in 3rd ch from hook, sc in next 2 ch, ch 3, sl st in 3rd ch from hook, sc in next 2 ch, sk next 2 ch, sc in next 4 ch, sk last 2 ch, sl st in st between ch-20 sp and top tooth; leave remaining sts unworked. Fasten off, leaving a long end.
FINISHING
Weave end around bottom edge to center of nose, thread yarn straight up center of nose and between eyes. Knot on wrong side. Weave in ends.
Following package instructions, apply fabric stiffener. Allow to dry.
With hot glue gun, attach Leaves and Skull to wreath. |
