GAUGE:
One Square = 3 1/2 x 3 1/2 in. (9 x 9 cm). BE SURE TO CHECK YOUR GAUGE. When you match the gauge in a pattern, your project will be the size specified in the pattern and the materials specified in the pattern will be sufficient. If it takes you fewer stitches and rows to make a 4 in. [10 cm] square, try using a smaller size hook or needles; if more stitches and rows, try a larger size hook or needles.

Pure Appeal Baby Blanket Reviewed by Heather Cody on 2009-10-07
I just finished this afghan as a gift for a baby shower. I also went with different brand of yarn(acrylic) in similar colors.
I agree that it was a bit of a pain to sew all 143 squares together. I had a hard time getting my gauge right- I went up to an N hook and the squares still weren't close to 3.5 inches. But it worked out. I also changed the border.
All in all, I like this pattern. I can't say anything about the yarn specified since I didn't use it, but once finished, this makes a very nice afghan.
My apologies for the camera phone pics..they don't do it justice.
