GAUGE:

Rnds 1-9 = 8 in. (20.5 cm) diameter. BE SURE TO CHECK YOUR GAUGE. When you match the gauge in a pattern, your project will be the size specified in the pattern and the materials specified in the pattern will be sufficient. If it takes you less stitches and rows to make a 4 in. [10 cm] square, try using a smaller size hook or needles; if more stitches and rows, try a larger size hook or needles.

STITCH EXPLANATION:

Spike stitch Yarn over hook, insert hook in next stitch 3 rows below, pull up loop even with current row, yarn over, draw through all 3 loops on hook.
Long Spike stitch Yarn over hook, insert hook in next stitch 4 rows below, pull up loop even with current row, yarn over, draw through all 3 loops on hook.

NOTES:

1. After working a spike stitch, take care to skip the stitch, in the current row, over which the spike stitch was worked.
2. Change color at the end of a rnd by working join as follows: insert hook in top of beg ch, yarn over with new color and draw through both loops on hook. Fasten off old color.

AFGHAN
With A, ch 3; join with sl st in first ch to form a ring.
Rnd 1: Ch 2, work 8 hdc in ring; join with sl st in top of beg ch - 8 sts.
Rnd 2: Ch 2, turn, 2 hdc in each hdc around; join with sl st in top of beg ch - 16 sts.
Rnd 3: Ch 2, turn, *hdc in next st, 2 hdc in next st; rep from * around; join with sl st in top of beg ch - 24 sts.
Rnd 4: Ch 2, turn, *hdc in next 2 sts, 2 hdc in next st; rep from * around; join with sl st in top of beg ch - 32 sts.
Rnd 5: Ch 2, turn, *hdc in next 3 sts, 2 hdc in next st; rep from * around; join with sl st in top of beg ch - 40 sts.
Rnds 6-12: Continue as established, increasing 8 sts evenly spaced around each rnd, and work in the following color sequence: 2 rnds with B, 2 rnds with C, 2 rnds with D, 1 rnd with A - 96 sts. Change to E.
Rnd 13: With E, ch 2, turn, hdc in next st, Spike stitch in next st, *2 hdc in next st, hdc in next 10 sts, Spike stitch in next st; rep from * around to last 10 hdc, hdc in next 10 hdc; join with sl st in top of beg ch - 104 sts. Change to A.
Rnds 14 and 15: Continue in hdc, increasing 8 sts evenly spaced around each rnd, and work in the following color sequence: 1 rnd with A, 1 rnd with D - 120 sts.
Rnd 16: With D, ch 2, turn, hdc in each st around; join with sl st in top of beg ch.
Rnds 17-25: Continue in hdc, increasing 8 sts evenly spaced around each rnd, and work in the following color sequence: 1 rnd with D, 2 rnds with E, 2 rnds with C, 1 rnd with B, 1 rnd with A, 2 rnds with B - 192 sts. Change to D.
Rnd 26: With D, ch 2, turn, hdc in next 5 sts, Spike stitch in next st, *hdc in next 11 sts, Spike stitch in next st; rep from * around to last 6 sts, hdc in next 6 sts; join with sl st in top of beg ch.
Rnds 27-30: Continue in hdc, increasing 8 sts evenly spaced around each rnd, and work in the following color sequence: 1 rnd with D, 3 rnds with A - 224 sts, Change to B.
Rnd 31: With B, ch 2, turn, hdc in next 2 sts, Spike stitch in next st, *hdc in next 13 sts, Long Spike stitch in next st, hdc in next 13 sts, Spike stitch in next st; rep from * around to last 25 sts, hdc in next 13 sts, Long Spike stitch in next st, hdc in next 11 sts, join with sl st in top of beg ch.

Rnds 52-55: Continue in hdc, increasing 8 sts evenly spaced around each rnd, and work in the following color sequence: 1 rnd with D, 3 rnds with A - 400 sts. Change to B.
Rnd 56: With B, ch 2, turn, hdc in next 16 sts, *Spike stitch in next st, hdc in next 24 sts, Long Spike stitch in next st, hdc next 24 sts; rep from * around to last 34 sts, Spike stitch in next st, hdc in next 24 sts, Long Spike stitch, hdc in next 8 sts; join with sl st in top of beg ch.
Rnds 57-62: Continue in hdc, increasing 8 sts evenly spaced around each rnd, and work in the following color sequence: 1 rnd with B, 2 rnds with C, 2 rnds with D, 1 rnd with A - 448 sts. Change to E.
Rnd 63: With E, ch 2, turn, hdc in next 3 sts, Spike stitch in next st, *hdc in next 27 sts, Spike stitch in next st; rep from * around to last 24 sts, hdc in next 24 sts; join with sl st in top of beg ch. Change to A.
Rnds 64 and 65: Continue in hdc, increasing 8 sts evenly spaced around each rnd, and work in the following color sequence: 1 rnd with A, 1 rnd with D - 464 sts.
Rnd 66: With D, ch 2, turn, hdc in each st around; join with sl st in top of beg.
