14 sts = 4 in. (10 cm) in St st (k on RS, p on WS) with A. When you match the gauge in a pattern, your project will be the size specified in the pattern and the materials specified in the pattern will be sufficient. The needle or hook size called for in the pattern is based on what the designer used, but is not unusual for gauge to vary from person to person. If it takes you fewer stitches and rows to make your swatch, try using a smaller size hook or needles; if more stitches and rows, try a larger size hook or needles.
Making a Gauge Swatch
Exact gauges is not imporant to this project.
With A, cast on 73 sts.
Work in St st (k on RS, p on WS) until piece measures about 56 in.
(142 cm) from beginning.
Thread about 24 in.
(61 cm) of B into large-eyed blunt needle.
From RS, make a random fold in Scarf, sew through both layers of Scarf for a few inches (our folds were 3-7 in.
([7.5-18 cm] long) to join.
Cut B, leaving long tails.
Repeat folding and sewing across entire Scarf.
Place scarf in a mesh laundry bag or pillowcase and wash by machine on a hot wash/cold rinse cycle with detergent and several pieces of clothing to agitate.
B tails will felt, remainder of Scarf will remain unfelted.
Weave in ends.
