GAUGE:

Square = 1 1/2 in. (4 cm). BE SURE TO CHECK YOUR GAUGE. When you match the gauge in a pattern, your project will be the size specified in the pattern and the materials specified in the pattern will be sufficient. If it takes you fewer stitches and rows to make a 4 in. [10 cm] square, try using a smaller size hook or needles; if more stitches and rows, try a larger size hook or needles.

NOTES:

Eight squares are worked for the first row of this afghan. Squares for the following rows are worked and joined as you go.

BLANKET
Row One Squares (make 8)

With A, ch 6.
Row 1 (RS): Working in back "bumps" of ch only, sc in 2nd ch from hook, (ch 1, sk next ch, sc in next ch) twice - 3 sc and 2 ch-1 sps.
Rows 2-5: Ch 1, turn, sc in first sc, (ch 1, sk next ch-1 sp, sc in next sc) twice.
Fasten off.

Row Two Squares (make and join 7 squares)
Note:
Squares are now joined to the previous row of squares as you work, as shown in diagram. Work proceeds down the side of one Square and joins to the sts of the last row of the next Square.
First Square
With RS facing, draw up a loop of B in end of last row of one Row One Square. Position another Row One Square with RS facing and ready to work in the sts of the last row.
Row 1: Working in ends of rows along side of current Row One Square, ch 1, sc in same sp as join, (ch 1, sk next row, sc in end of next row) twice; sl st in first sc of next Row One Square.
