8 sts + 8 rows = 4 in. (10 cm) in hdc. BE SURE TO CHECK YOUR GAUGE. When you match the gauge in a pattern, your project will be the size specified in the pattern and the materials specified in the pattern will be sufficient. If it takes you fewer stitches and rows to make a 4 in. [10 cm] square, try using a smaller size hook or needles; if more stitches and rows, try a larger size hook or needles.

Ch 4; join with sl st in first ch to form a ring.
Row 1 (RS): Ch 3 (counts as hdc, ch 1 here and throughout), 3 hdc in ring, ch 1, hdc in ring - 5 hdc and 2 ch-1 sp.
Row 2: Ch 3, turn, sk first ch-1 sp, 2 hdc in next hdc, hdc in next hdc, 2 hdc in next hdc, ch 1, hdc in 2nd ch of turning ch - 7 hdc and 2 ch-1 sp.
Row 3: Ch 3, turn, sk first ch-1 sp, 2 hdc in next hdc, hdc in next 3 hdc, 2 hdc in next hdc, ch 1, hdc in 2nd ch of turning ch - 9 hdc and 2 ch-1 sp.
Row 4: Ch 3, turn, sk first ch-1 sp, 2 hdc in next hdc, hdc in each hdc to last hdc before ch-1 sp, 2 hdc in next hdc, ch 1, hdc in 2nd ch of turning ch - 11 hdc and 2 ch-1 sp.
Rep Row 4 until Shawl measures 35 in.

Join yarn with sl st in beg ch-4 ring.

Rep Rows 4-6 along side edge to top.
Join yarn in beg ch-4 ring and rep edging along other side of Shawl.
