Circular knitting needle size 8 (5 mm), 16 in. (40 cm) long
GAUGE:
1 Block = about 6 x 6 in. (15 x 15 cm) BE SURE TO CHECK YOUR GAUGE. When you match the gauge in a pattern, your project will be the size specified in the pattern and the materials specified in the pattern will be sufficient. If it takes you less stitches and rows to make a 4 in. [10 cm] square, try using a smaller size hook or needles; if more stitches and rows, try a larger size hook or needles.
Exact gauges is not imporant to this project.
STITCH EXPLANATION:
ssk (slip, slip, knit) Slip next 2 sts as if to knit, one at a time, to right needle; insert left needle into fronts of these 2 sts and knit them tog.
INSTRUCTIONS
SCARF
BLOCK 1
Cast on 48 sts.
Row 1 (RS): K24, place marker, k24.
Row 2 (WS): K to 2 sts before marker, ssk, slip marker, k2tog, k to end - 46 sts.
Row 3, 5 and 7: Knit.
Rows 4, 6 and 8: Rep Row 2.
Row 9: Knit.
Row 10: K2, p to 2 sts before marker, p2tog, slip marker, p2tog through back loops, p to last 2 sts, k2 - 38 sts.
Row 11: K2, p to last 2 sts, k2.
Row 12: Rep Row 10 - 36 sts.
Rows 13-32: Rep Rows 9-12 five more times - 16 sts.
Rows 33-44: Rep Rows 3 and 4 six times - 4 sts.
Row 45: Ssk, k2tog.
Bind off.
BLOCK 2
With RS facing, and aboe diagram, pick up and k 24 sts along upper right hand side of Block 1. Turn and cast on 24 sts. Cut yarn and slide sts to other end of needle, join yarn. Work Rows 1-45 of Block 1. Do not bind off.
BLOCK 3
With RS facing, pick up and k 24 sts along upper left hand side of Block 2. Cut yarn and slide sts to other end of needle. Join yarn and cast on 24 sts. Work Rows 1-45 of Block 1. Bind off.
BLOCK 4
Work as for Block 2, joining to Block 3.
BLOCK 5
Work as for Block 3, joining to Block 4.
BLOCK 6
Work as for Block 2, joining to Block 5.
BLOCK 7
Work as for Block 3, joining to Block 6.
BLOCK 8
Work separately, as for Block 1.
FINISHING
Sew Block 8 to Block 7. Weave in ends.
