8 sts and 12 rows = 4 in. [10 cm] in rev St st. When you match the gauge in a pattern, your project will be the size specified in the pattern and the materials specified in the pattern will be sufficient. The needle or hook size called for in the pattern is based on what the designer used, but it is not unusual for gauge to vary from person to person. If it takes you fewer stitches and rows to make your swatch, try using a smaller size hook or needles; if more stitches and rows, try a larger size hook or needles.

Button band: With RS facing and A, pick up and k 52 (52, 54, 54, 56, 56) sts evenly along center Front (Left Front for female; Right Front for male).
Knit 1 row A, 2 rows B, 2 rows A, binding off loosely on last row.
Buttonhole band: Work in same manner as button band (Right Front for female; Left Front for male), however, working six buttonholes (= k2tog, yo) evenly spaced on RS, B row.
Collar: With RS facing and A, beg and ending at button band st next to body, pick up and k approx 34 (38, 41, 44, 47, 50) sts around neck edge.
Work in garter st (k every row), inc 1 st at each end of collar (k in back and front of 2nd st from beg of row and in 3rd st from end of row) every other row 8 times (or 10 times for wider collar, if desired).
Knit 2 rows even, binding off loosely on last row.
Weave in ends.
Sew on buttons.
