6 single crochet = about 4 in. (10 cm). When you match the gauge in a pattern, your project will be the size specified in the pattern and the materials specified in the pattern will be sufficient. The needle or hook size called for in the pattern is based on what the designer used, but it is not unusual for gauge to vary from person to person. If it takes you fewer stitches and rows to make your swatch, try using a smaller size hook or needles; if more stitches and rows, try a larger size hook or needles.
Making a Gauge Swatch
Exact gauges is not imporant to this project.
Being careful not to twist the chain, join the end of the chain to the beginning with a slip stitch to make a ring.
Work in rounds, always joining last stitch of each round to the first stitch of the round with a slip stitch.
Round 1: Work a single crochet in 2nd chain from hook and in each chain around.
Round 2: Chain 3 (counts as first double crochet), turn, work a double crochet in each stitch around.
Round 3: Chain 1, turn, work a single crochet in each stitch around.
Repeat Rounds 2 and 3 until piece measures about 8 1/2 in.
(21.5 cm) from beginning.
Weave in ends.
