Winter Doll Hat and Muff
Lion Brand® Lion® Wool - TiffanyTM
GAUGE: Muff:
Tiffany Lining: 12 sts + 18 rows = 4 in [10 cm] with 3 strands held tog in
stockinette stitch on U.S. #10 needles
Lion Wool Exterior: 10 sts + 12 rows = 4 in [10 cm] with 2 strands held
tog in stockinette stitch on U.S. #10 needles before felting.
Hat:
16 stitches by 24 rows = 4 in (10 cm) with US #8 (5mm) needles BE SURE TO CHECK YOUR GAUGE. When you match the gauge in a pattern, your project will be the size specified in the pattern and the materials specified in the pattern will be sufficient. If it takes you fewer stitches and rows to make a 4 in. [10 cm] square, try using a smaller size hook or needles; if more stitches and rows, try a larger size hook or needles.

Lining
With two strands of B (use a strand from the outside and one from the
inside of the ball) and one strand of C, cast on 22 stitches.
Row 1 Knit
Row 2 Purl
Repeat until piece is 10 inches [approx 25 cm] long. Bind off all stitches, leaving tail
of 2 ft.
FINISHING
Using the large-eyed blunt needle and (C)
- Sew the top and bottom of the outside together to form a cylinder.
- Sew the top and bottom of the lining together to form a cylinder.
- Position the lining over the outside so the right sides are
together, align an edge and sew the one edge together.
- Turn the lining to the inside (the right side will now be where the
hands of the wearer will be) and sew the remaining edge.
FELTING
Felting is a process whereby the wool is deliberately handled so that
it is matted into a fabric. Wool fibers have scales and are also crimped.
When these fibers are wetted and softened and then rubbed together they
grab each other and are permanently bound together. This happens when you
put a wool item in a washer and agitate it -- it comes out much smaller
and also denser, because the fibers have bound together.
Finished muff size depends on how much the piece is felted. Keep
in mind that you can always felt more, but once felting is done, it is not
reversible.
Make SURE the muff is turned with the wool side out. Wash by machine on
a hot wash/cold rinse cycle with detergent and several pieces of clothing
to agitate. Pat it flat to shape and let it air dry -- Tiffany
should not be put in the dryer!
When the piece is dry, use a soft hairbrush to fluff the fur on
the ends.

HAT
The hat has an edging of Tiffany that is knit as you go.
With smaller needles and (A) cast on 20 stitches.
Row 1 and all odd-numbered rows: Knit 16, add one strand of B
and one of C, knit to end of row with all three strands.
Row 2 With one strand each A, B and C, knit 4. Drop the
strands of B and C, knit to end of row with A.
Rows 3-6 Repeat Rows 1 and 2
Row 7 Knit 16, add one strand of B and one of C, knit to end of row
with all three strands.
Row 8 With one strand each A, B and C, knit 4. Drop the
strands of B and C, purl to end of row.
Rows 9-29 Repeat rows 7 and 8
Row 30 With one strand each A, B and C, knit 4. Drop
the strands of B and C, purl until there are four stitches remaining, knit
to end of row.

|
Rows 31-62 Repeat Rows 29 and 30
Rows 61-80 Repeat Rows 7 and 8
Rows 81-89 Repeat Rows 1 and 2. Bind off, leaving a tail of
about 12 inches.
Finishing
Fold the strip in half and, using the tail , sew up the back (this is the
side that does not have the fur on it.)
Pom-Pom Ties (make two)
Wrap one strand of (A) around the ruler 50 times. Cut 2 pieces
of yarn 24 inches [60 cm] long. Using both strands, tie the middle of
the yarn as tightly as you can. Slide the bundle of yarn off
the ruler and cut in the middle to release the yarn and form the
pom-pom. Cut one of the strands of yarn so that there are
three long ones remaining. Braid these three together to make
the tie cord for the hat. When the braided part is 8 inches [20 cm] long,
tie in a knot. Thread the yarn through the needle and attach
at the front bottom of the hat to make a tie. Repeat on the other
side

Tassel
Wrap one strand of A around the cardboard 10 times. Cut 2
pieces of yarn 12 inches long. Using both strands, tie the middle of
the yarn as tightly as you can. Cut other end open to remove
cardboard. As with the pom-pom ties, cut one of the long strands so that
is the length of the rest of the tassel and treat it as a strand of the
tassel. |
  |
| With A, wrap around the top of the tassel and bind as shown.
Braid the three long strands for the attachment cord. When
it is about an inch [2.5 cm] long, tie in a knot. Thread the yarn
through the needle and attach to the peak at the top of the hat. |
