25 sts + 24 rows = 4" (10 cm) on size 8 needles with A in ribbing stitch
Exact gauges is not imporant to this project.

This piece is made in 1 x 1 ribbing (ribbing that is one stitch wide). As a result, the finished item is very stretchy.

Knitting with Ruffles requires a special, yet simple, technique. The loops are formed by inserting the needle into this tape-fabric yarn. Please visit to read or click here for a short instructional video and audio description about working with Ruffles.

With (A), cast on 44 stitches.

Rows 1-24 *Knit 1, purl 1 repeat from * to end of row

Row 25: Knit into the front and back of the first stitch (increase 1),
*purl 1, knit1 repeat from * to end of row (increases one stitch)

Rows 26: Repeat row 25 (increases by one stitch)

Row 27-32: *Purl 1, knit1, repeat from * to end of row

Row 33 Knit into the front and back of the first stitch (increase 1),
*knit 1, purl 1 repeat from * to end of row (increases by one stitch)

Row 34 Repeat row 33 (increases by one stitch)

Rows 35-40 *Knit 1, purl 1 repeat from * to end of row

Repeat Rows 25 – 40 until piece measures 15 inches [38 cm].
Change to (B), knit one row; purl one row, knit one row. (this keeps the
ruffles all on one side.) Bind off, weave in ends. See the tutorial
on knitting with Ruffles yarn for details on how to bind off and knit with this

Fold the piece to make a sleeve with the ruffle at the top. Thread the
large-eyed, blunt needle with (A). Starting at the end with the ruffle, sew the
edges together, stopping about 2 inches [5 cm] from the end. On the end of the
piece where there are no ruffles, sew just the end, leaving the opening. This is
where the thumb goes.
