6.6 sc and 8 rows = 4" (10 cm) on size N-13 (9 mm) hook When you match the gauge in a pattern, your project will be the size specified in the pattern and the materials specified in the pattern will be sufficient. The needle or hook size called for in the pattern is based on what the designer used, but is not unusual for gauge to vary from person to person. If it takes you fewer stitches and rows to make your swatch, try using a smaller size hook or needles; if more stitches and rows, try a larger size hook or needles.
Making a Gauge Swatch
Exact gauges is not imporant to this project.
The ribbed appearance and stretch comes from crocheting into the back loop of each stitch.
Chain 6 and close into a ring with 1 slip stitch in first chain.
Place marker for beg of round.
Rnd 1: Chain 1, work 6 sc in ring, join with slip stitch to beginning chain.
Rnd 2: 2 single crochet in each single crochet around -12 stitches.
Rnd 3: 1 single crochet in next single crochet, 2 single crochet in next single crochet; repeat to marker - 18 stitches.
Rnd 4: 1 single crochet in each of next 2 single crochet, 2 single crochet in next single crochet; repeat to marker - 24 stitches.
Rnd 5: 1 single crochet in each of next 3 single crochet, 2 single crochet in next single crochet; to marker - 30 stitches.
Adult women only: Rnd 6: *1 single crochet in each of next 5 single crochet, 2 single crochet in next single crochet; repeat from * around - 35 stitches.
Adult men only: Rnd 6: *1 single crochet in each of next 4 single crochet, 2 single crochet in next single crochet; repeat from * around - 36 stitches.
Work even in single crochet until 6.5 (7.5, 8.5) inches from center of crown.
Fasten off; weave in ends.
