24 sts + 24 rows = 4" (10 cm) in pattern When you match the gauge in a pattern, your project will be the size specified in the pattern and the materials specified in the pattern will be sufficient. The needle or hook size called for in the pattern is based on what the designer used, but it is not unusual for gauge to vary from person to person. If it takes you fewer stitches and rows to make your swatch, try using a smaller size hook or needles; if more stitches and rows, try a larger size hook or needles.

Bind off all stitches, weave in ends.
Fold scarf in half lengthwise and using the large-eyed blunt needle and 18 inches [46 cm] of yarn, slip st 11 inches [28 cm] of straight edge from foldline.
This is the back of the hood; the fold is the top of the hood.
If you are using a tassel, attach at the top corner.
After putting the hood on, fold the front edge of the hood back and wrap the ends securely around the neck for maximum warmth.
