LION BRAND crochet hook size E/4 (3.5 mm), if desired, for working p5tog.
It is helpful to work with knitting needles in a color that contrasts with yarn color. This will make it easier to see your stitches.
27 sts + 30 rows = 4 in. (10 cm) in Garter st (k every row). When you match the gauge in a pattern, your project will be the size specified in the pattern and the materials specified in the pattern will be sufficient. The needle or hook size called for in the pattern is based on what the designer used, but it is not unusual for gauge to vary from person to person. If it takes you fewer stitches and rows to make your swatch, try using a smaller size hook or needles; if more stitches and rows, try a larger size hook or needles.
Making a Gauge Swatch
Exact gauges is not imporant to this project.
Inc4 (increase 4) (K1, p1) twice into next st without removing st from needle, then k1 in same st - 4 sts increased (5 sts made from one st).
p5tog Insert needle through next 5 sts and purl 5 sts together. If desired, use a small crochet hook to do this maneuver: insert crochet hook, as if it were a knitting needle and as if to purl, through next 5 sts and p5tog by pulling yarn through all 5 sts at once.
PATTERN STITCH Bubble Pattern (multiple of 6 sts + 5) Notes: 1.
P5tog can be worked using a crochet hook if desired (see Stitch Explanation above).
Bubble Pattern can be worked from row by row instructions or from chart.
Row 1 (WS): Knit each st across the row, wrapping the yarn around the needle twice instead of once for each st.
Row 2: Purl each st across the row, dropping the extra wrap on each st off the needle as you complete the st.
Note: In Row 3, use crochet hook to complete the p5tog if desired.
Row 3: P5tog, *Inc4 in next st, p5tog; rep from * across.
Row 4: Purl each st across the row.
Row 5: Inc4 in next st, *p5tog, Inc4; rep from * across the row.
Row 6: Rep Row 4.
Rep Rows 1-6 for Bubble pattern.
SCARF Cast on 67 sts.
Work in Garter st (k every row) for 6 rows for border.
First end of Scarf Notes: 1.
Work the first and last st of Scarf in Garter st (for side borders) and center 65 sts in Bubble pattern.2.
Place a stitch marker between each repeat of the Bubble pattern.
Next Row: K1, work Row 1 of Bubble pattern, k1.
Keeping first and last st in Garter st (for edge st), continue in Bubble pattern as established until piece measures about 12 in.
(30.5 cm) from beg, end with a Row 2 of pattern.
Note:You will have repeated Rows 1-6 of Bubble pattern about 18 times to reach the 12 in.
(30.5 cm) length.
End with a Row 2 means that on the final repeat of the Bubble pattern you would only work Rows 1 and 2.
Center Section Notes: 1.
Sts are decreased across the first row of center section, then increased on the last row of the center section.2.
The center section of the Scarf is worked with some of the same sts used in the Bubble pattern, but does not create the Bubble pattern.
Row 1 (WS): K1, *p5tog, k1; rep from * across - 23 sts at the end of this row.
Rows 2-4: K1, purl to last st, k1.
Row 5: K the first st, k each st across the row to last st, wrapping the yarn around the needle twice instead of once for each st, k the last st.
Row 6: K the first st, purl each st across the row to the last st, dropping the extra wrap on each st off the needle as you complete the st, k the last st.
