GAUGE:
16 sts + 32 rows = 4 in. (10 cm) in Garter st (k every row). When you match the gauge in a pattern, your project will be the size specified in the pattern and the materials specified in the pattern will be sufficient. The needle or hook size called for in the pattern is based on what the designer used, but it is not unusual for gauge to vary from person to person. If it takes you fewer stitches and rows to make your swatch, try using a smaller size hook or needles; if more stitches and rows, try a larger size hook or needles. Making a Gauge Swatch

STITCH EXPLANATION:
kfbf (knit into front, then back, and front again)
A double increase worked as follows:
1.

Knit the next st through the front loop, but do not remove the st from your left hand needle.


2.

Knit the same st once more, this time inserting your needle through the back loop of the st, and do not remove the st from the left hand needle.
3.

Knit the same st again, this time inserting your needle through the front loop again.

You will have created 3 loops (sts) on your right hand needle.
4.

Drop the st from your left hand needle - you have increased 2 sts.
kfb (knit into front and then back)
An increase worked as follows:
1.

Knit the next st through the front loop, but do not remove the st from your left hand needle.


2.

Knit the same st once more, this time inserting your needle through the back loop of the st.

You will have created 2 loops (sts) on your right hand needle.
3.

Drop the st from your left hand needle - you have increased 1 st.
ssk (slip, slip, knit) Slip next 2 sts as if to knit, one at a time, to right needle; insert left needle into fronts of these 2 sts and knit them tog - 1 st decreased.

NOTES:
The Front and Back are identical.

Front and Back begin with a center square is knit on the diagonal then stitches are picked up along each side of the Square to make borders.

Center Square
Cast on 1 st.
Next Row: Kfbf in this st - 3 sts at the end of this row.
Next (Increase) Row: K1, kfb, k to end - 4 sts at the end of this row.
Rep last row until each side measures 6 (6 1/2, 7 1/2, 8, 8 1/2) in.

(15 (16.5, 19, 20.5, 21.5) cm).
Next (Decrease) Row: K1, k2tog, k to end.
Rep last row until 3 sts remain.
Next Row: K3tog.
Fasten off.
Each side of Square should measure about 6 (6 1/2, 7 1/2, 8, 8 1/2) in.

Border #1
With RS facing, pick up and k24 (26, 30, 32, 34) sts evenly spaced along any side of Center Square.

Knit 14 rows.

Bind off.



Border #2
With RS facing, pick up and k32 (34, 38, 40, 42) sts evenly spaced along adjoining side of Center Square and across the edge of Border #1.

Knit 14 rows.

Bind off.



Border #3
With RS facing, pick up and k32 (34, 38, 40, 42) sts evenly spaced along adjoining side of Center Square and across the edge of Border #2.

Knit 14 rows.

Bind off.



Border #4
With RS facing, pick up and k40 (42, 46, 48, 50) sts along remaining side of Center Square and across the edges of Borders #1 and #3.

Knit 14 rows.

Bind off.



FRONT
Make same as Back.
SLEEVES (make 2)
Cast on 32 (36, 40, 44, 48) sts.

Work in Garter st (k every row) until piece measures 5 1/2 (6 1/2, 7 1/2, 10 1/2, 11) in.

(14 (16.5, 19, 26.5, 28) cm) from beginning.

Bind off.
Rep for second sleeve.

FINISHING
Seam one edge of Front and Back together for about 2 (2 1/4, 2 1/2, 2 3/4, 3) in.

(5 (5.5, 6.5, 7, 7.5) cm) on each side for shoulders.

Place markers about 4 (4 1/2, 5, 5 1/2, 6) in.

(10 (11.5, 12.5, 14, 15) cm) down from shoulders for armhole.
Sew Sleeves between armhole markers.

Sew side and Sleeve seams.

Weave in ends.
