2 pattern reps + 6 rnds = 5 in. (12.5 cm) in pattern. When you match the gauge in a pattern, your project will be the size specified in the pattern and the materials specified in the pattern will be sufficient. The needle or hook size called for in the pattern is based on what the designer used, but it is not unusual for gauge to vary from person to person. If it takes you fewer stitches and rows to make your swatch, try using a smaller size hook or needles; if more stitches and rows, try a larger size hook or needles.
Making a Gauge Swatch
Exact gauges is not imporant to this project.
Cowl is worked in joined rnds.
At the end of each rnd, work a sl st to join the last st to the first st.
Do not turn at the beg of rnds.
To create scallops along both edges, Cowl is worked in two sections by crocheting along both sides of foundation ch.
If you are concerned about joining the beg ch into a ring without twisting the ch, you can work Rnd 1 as a row, then join at end of Row 1 as follows: Ch 65, dc in 4th ch from hook (beg ch counts as first dc), sk next 2 ch, (3 dc, ch 1, 3 dc) in next ch (shell made), sk next 2 ch, *dc in next 2 ch, sk next 2 ch, shell in next ch, sk next 2 ch; rep from * around; join with sl st in top of beg ch.
Use the beginning tail to sew ends of Row 1 together, then follow pattern beg with Rnd 2.
Being careful not to twist ch; join with sl st in first ch to make a large ring.
Rnd 1: Ch 3 (counts as first dc here and throughout), dc in next ch, sk next 2 ch, (3 dc, ch 1, 3 dc) in next ch (shell made), sk next 2 ch, *dc in next 2 ch, sk next 2 ch, shell in next ch, sk next 2 ch; rep from * around; join with sl st in top of beg ch - 9 pattern reps at the end of this rnd.
Rnd 2: Ch 3, dc in next dc, sk next 2 dc, dc in next dc, ch 1, (dc, ch 1, dc) in next ch-1 sp, ch 1, dc in next dc, sk next 2 dc, *dc in next 2 dc, sk next 2 dc, dc in next dc, ch 1, (dc, ch 1, dc) in next ch-1 sp, ch 1, dc in next dc, sk next 2 dc; rep from * around; join with sl st in top of beg ch.
Rnd 3: Ch 3, dc in next dc, sk next ch-1 sp, (2 dc, ch 3, 2 dc) in next ch-1 sp, sk next ch-1 sp, sk next dc, *dc in each of next 2 dc, sk next ch-1 sp, (2 dc, ch 3, 2 dc) in next ch-1 sp, sk next ch-1 sp, sk next dc; rep from * around; join with sl st in top of beg ch.
Rnd 4: Ch 3, dc in next dc, shell in next ch-3 sp, sk next 2 dc, *dc in each of next 2 dc, shell in next ch-3 sp, sk next 2 dc; rep from * around; join with sl st in top of beg ch.
Rnds 5-7: Rep Rnds 2-4.
Turn to work along opposite side of foundation ch.
From RS, join yarn with sl st in base of first dc of any 2-dc group.
Rep Rnds 1-7, aligning sts with the sts in the First Section.
Weave in ends.
